[Dm] [D] Well me and Oliver and [G] Virgil were in the drugstore killing time [A] when my eyes fell upon this [D] magazine.
I got to reading this article [G] about skydiving and [A] parachutes, said jumping out of airplanes
[D] was the thing.
Being raised down on the farm and [G] always ready for adventure, [A] well I knew that I could [D] find a way.
Demergill, he's got a parachute and [G] Uncle Harvey's got an airplane.
[A] So we called the boys together and [D] today's the day.
Well I found out too late what [G] Uncle Harvey called an airplane.
[A] It was nothing but an engine [D] and a wing.
And I felt my fear [Bm] begin to rise as Delmar Facknett parachute [A] cost told me I was doing
the [D] right thing.
[B] [G] [D]
[Bm] [A]
[D] Ron McLaughlin shook my hand and J [G].D. strapped me in the [A] harness.
Some children brought a jug and they [D] passed it around.
I took one look at that parachute [G] and that whiskey and that airplane.
[A] I turned that bottle up and I [D] drank it down.
I was drunk as Cooter Jones when [G] they poured me in the plane.
[A] Till the engine cocked and headed for [D] the clouds.
[Bm] I was sober as Judge when [G] Harvey opened up the door [A] and I never known my heart to beat [D] so loud.
I screamed [G] Harvey I can't do this.
You and I have known each other a very long time.
I've been with my uncle all my life.
I asked another human being to jump out of an airplane at this altitude and at this velocity
is simply ridiculous man.
At which point he [A] kicked me out the door.
And I wrapped my hands around [D] the landing gear.
I was holding on real good [G] till Harvey stepped upon my [A] fingers and Virgil heard [D] me screaming
way down there.
[Bm] [A]

[Bm] [A]
[D] Well I thanked God and I thanked Buddha.
[G] I thanked Jesus.
I thanked Judah.
I [A] thanked Krishna and all the lesser [D] Hindu gods.
Most of all I thanked my good friend Del [G] McGill when my parachute finally opened.
And then I [A] thought hell there ain't no use in being [D] afraid.
Came crashing through that hen house I [G] scared chickens I broke eggs and then [A] I kissed that
ground I fainted [D] dead away.
Now friends I've been in a few battles and [G] I've been shot at once or twice.
[A] And I damn near been run over [D] by a train.
But I never do remember [G] ever feeling so afraid [A] as that day I jumped from Uncle [Bm] Harvey's plane.
[D] [N]
