Perhaps more than anyone else in the past decade, Canadian singer-pianist Diana Krall
has breathed new life into jazz.
With her Hollywood looks and throaty voice, she's created a new generation of jazz fans
and become a major international star.
But it hasn't always been a smooth road to the top, with some critics suspicious of her commercial success.
Back in Australia for the first time in five years, Diana Krall spoke to Danielle Parry
in Perth about the great loves of her life, music, marriage and motherhood.
[Gm] [A]
[Dm]
[A] I've always loved music from Brazil.
The groove of it just [G] appeals to me.
It's another [C] version of playing this feel, the swing, it's just [Am] another feel that is
also [F] interesting to improvise over and play [Gm] jazz.
[G] [D]
[C] Rio [F] might be the setting for Diana Krall's [Dbm] latest album, The Very [C] Intimate Quiet Nights,
but it seems the Canadian's inspiration [Ab] comes from much closer to home.
[F] I always say it reminds me of Vancouver because it [A] is the mountains and the sea, how lovely.
This is where I want to be, here with you so close to me.
I said once [G] that that particular translation of the lyric by [F] Gene Lees is sort of like
a [Bb] love letter to my husband, but certainly [Gm] that is very [G] autobiographical, those lyrics
for me of feeling finally content and safe and happy [F] with the mountains and the sea and
my husband and my children and just that's a wonderful [Eb] place to finally feel.
[Bb] Since her last visit to Australia, the Grammy Award winner [Eb] has released four albums [C] and
had twin boys [Gm] with her husband Elvis [Eb] Costello.
Life has become an [G] international juggling act.
They started [Eb] touring with us on a bus when they were six months old [Db] and they've [G] toured
all over Canada and [C] America on a bus and [B] last fall through [Eb] Europe.
So we just find a park and a playground and so I have a lot of energy, I don't sleep very
much anyway so I just think life is much fuller even though I'm a little more fatigued than usual.
Did you think that being a parent was something that would be compatible [F] with a music career?
My mum was very [G] inspiring to me, I think one of my earliest [Gb] memories was with my mother,
driving every day in the summer time to university [Ebm] two hours away [G] and then coming back and cooking
dinner for us.
[Eb] She was really an amazing parent as well as my dad [G] is still.
Now [Em] I don't [Fm] make much money.
But if it [B] wasn't for her close friend and mentor Elton John, Diana Kral may not have
started a [Ab] family at all.
I [G] remember I got married shortly after my mother [Ab] passed away and I was thinking about
things and we sat and he said, Diana when you finish this record you're going to be
40, what about [N] having children?
I was like yeah, I need to get going on that.
So, here we are with three year old twin boys leaping off the furniture and singing
Cheryl Crow songs.
[D]
[F] [Bb] [Eb]
[Dm] While she does enjoy writing her own material, [Eb] Diana Kral's [F] strength has always been breathing
new life into old classics.
[E]
[G] When you do rework somebody else's song that made them [Eb] famous, do you care what they think
about your version?
If [G] I did that I'd never do anything.
There is a very satisfying [G] and creative process to take something like that away and make
it your own story.
That's when I started getting into a character [D] where I started to feel like right now I'm
working on a [Ab] Bob Dylan song that I've [Gm] always loved for years [Gb] and I thought well no it's
just too autobiographical [A] for him.
But then I [Abm] took the story and made it different, performed it [G] differently and it's become another story.
When he [B] passes each girl he [C] passes goes [G] ah.
[B] Even though Diana Kral's been playing piano [Ab] since she was a small [E] child, singing has always
proved to be a nerve-wracking [Bb] experience and will be tonight when she takes [Gm] to the stage in Perth.
I still hide behind the piano [C] a little bit, but I'm getting better.
I don't like [F] singing in front and standing in front, that's really not [Bb] my forte.
But I enjoy playing live, I enjoy making people feel [G] good.
A boy from Ipanema goes walking, [Cm] when he passes [B] I smile [Bb] but he doesn't [F] see.
