Hey, this is John with LearningGuitarNow.com and this is podcast number 43.
And in this podcast I'm going to show you a lick in the style of Dickie Betts played
over a whipping post style track.
So to get started, this is in the key of A minor and we're using mainly the minor pentatonic
scale, a little bit of the blues scale and the Dorian scale.
So the lick, when it starts out as, on the root note, 10th fret of the B string, pretty
simple little lick here, straight from A minor pentatonic, 8-10.
[G] And one thing to take note of is a whipping post is in a 12-8 time signature, so you're
going to [N] count it 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10-11-12.
So these are three pickup notes that go to the first bar of that.
She would count it 1-2-3-4-5-6 [F]-7-8-9-10-11-12.
That's when you hit the first three notes.
Then it comes in right on the beat of the bends, which is going to bend the 10th fret
of the high E [Em] string.
Now apply heavy bra-brato on the 10th fret of the high E [A#] string.
[A] Now after you hit that, you're going to hit 10 again on the B string, [Fm] 8-10, and bend it
up, but not quite the two fret bends.
Dickey Betts kind of bends these up to a little bit [D#] around the 11th fret, so you get this.
[E]
[F] I like to do an upstroke with a pick to get this type of sound, so you have this sound going on.
The first one I like to do an upstroke.
[E] [D#]
If you want to keep repeating them, you want to take this lick and add your own stuff to
it, you can keep repeating it with [Em] upstrokes to get that type of sound.
I hear Dickey [Fm] doing a lot.

Now after you do those bends like that, what you want to do is hit the 10th fret of the B string.
Now to get to that note is a little tricky, so you're going to bend the 10th fret.
[E] You've got it bent up.
The easiest way I've found to get to that 10th fret without pulling down and pulling
off and you get the 8th fret sounding a little bit and things get kind of messed up is do
a little upstroke rake with the pick.
[A] You can [E] go right to the note.
[A] If you [E] don't do it,

That's just the basic lick, you want to get down, upstroke with a pick.
