[F] But when we left to go tour with the National,
John suggested that we make an album someday [E] together
and recently we found ourselves in the position to do it.
So we spent the last two years sort of collecting songs
from musicians that we respect and admire.
[D#m] [F#]
[G#] I [E] want everybody to sing along.
I think the real kick-off point to Dark Was the Night was
I was just talking to Aaron casually like a friend
and he would ask me, you know, what did you do this weekend?
Like you ask friends and I would go, well, you know, I went shopping,
I did the wash, you know, ran errands, and I was like,
oh, what did you do this weekend?
And he goes, oh, the guys from Arcade Fire were in town.
And that's literally where the light bulb went off in my head
and I was like, hanging out with Arcade Fire, Sufjan, Stephen,
some of the coolest, most creative people in the world,
yeah, we should definitely do a Red Hot record.
It's acquired in a lot of us singing.
[N] Really a very simple melody.
[E] Haley here has taken the trouble [D#] to write this.
I'm glad you guys agreed to this.
And so if it occurs to you to harmonize in whatever [F#] way Yeah!
Do so.
So we thought, you know, when trying to put this thing out,
we [F] wanted to, we had a couple different ideas of like house parties
or some way to get [A] everybody together and just play the songs acoustically
and, you know, have a party while doing it.
So [G#m] I guess, you know, we ended up deciding on like doing it in a loft
and just getting [Bm] as many artists as we can.
[A] All right, ready?

[A] [D] Here is the sound that photographs [A] make
[Bm] When I see them, [A] when I hear them
I see reasons of [Bm] sharp [A] precision
On this, [A] on the
[C#m] right
Together, with rope and twine
Stuck together, wasting glue
To a place of knotty pine
And a couple of [A] men who cried [B] on blue
[D] [A]

And a couple of men [A] who cried [E]
on [B] blue
[F#] [A]
[N]
Okay, woo!
I don't think you're much in the way of harmonizing
[F#] We never really figured out [F#] what the harmony was supposed to be
So maybe you guys are the best at it
[G#] All [F#m] [D] right, are you playing Don't Go [Bm] Breaking My [A] Heart?
[C#m] [Bm] Don't go breaking my heart
[A] I'll kill you if I try
[G#] That also sounded like it could be in a [B] Billy Joel song Yeah
