[E] I'll never [A] forget [E] how
[Gm] [G#m]
[A] he brought me safely [E] through.
[Em] Lord, [A] I'll never forget [E] how he brought me through.
I know the time, the place, the [F#] place.
[D] You saved [A] me, Lord, [Cm] saved me.
[E] I'll [A#] never [Em] [A] forget how [E] he brought me through.
[A]
[E] [N]
[F#] [F#] Well, way down [G] south where we [F#] came from, [B] in the land of the [F#] good sunshine,
[B] there's a little bird that [F#] flies around [G#] [F#] honking all the time.
One [E] day in the spring while the birds [F#] were honking, [G#m] James B.
[F#] Davis overheard.
Then he decided to name his group the [B] Dixie Hummingbirds.
So we've been singing for the [G#] past
Ever since we were [C#] in our teens, [B] riding down the highways and all of our [C#] pockets clean.
[D#] Who are we?
[A#] The Dixie [B] Hummingbirds.
Who?
The Dixie [C#] Hummingbirds.
[F#] Well, [G#] the road was rough and the going was [F#] tough, but we managed to sing every night.
The original Dixie Hummingbirds were organized by James B.
Davis in 1928 in Greenville, South Carolina.
They had gone to New York and come back and broke up.
And Davis reorganized and then they came to Spartanburg and I got with them.
So that was in 1938 and I've been there [C#] ever since.
[D] There has been about five sets of Dixie Hummingbirds.
[B] Paul Owens joined us around 49 or 50.
I believe Howard joined us in 51 or 52.
[F#] We got walking [F] somewhere in 54 [B] or 5.
[B] We love to sing it [Em] there and [F#] everywhere.
[B] We've been singing [G#] for 64 years and may sing at least [F#] 10 more.
[Em] It hasn't been easy for them.
[N]
They've sang in all kinds of climates.
They've sang in every city and state you can possibly think of.
They have been able to roll with the punches, as you say.
They have dealt with the knocks and they have dealt with the disappointments.
But yet they're still strong and they're kept right on going.
These are the things I think that has kept them strong through the years.
A lot of groups have started out with them, [G] folded up, went back home, packed it in.
The Dixie Hummingbirds are still out here today.
For [Bm] 64 years, you don't hear me.
[Dm] [Bm] 64 years, the Lord's been guiding us up and down the dangerous highways and byways.
God is so [G] good.
And out of all the [G#m] singing that we have done,
every [C#] now and then we [B] meet people,
[F#] [Bm] they tell us we ought [G] to quit singing now.
They say we're getting [B] too old to [Bm] sing.
[B] But I think [Em] after 64 [B] years,
[Bm] of wearing down [F] these old voices,
[Bm] I think we sound pretty good.
[B]
Do you think [Bm] we sound all right?
[B] [B]
I don't care what people say.
[B] If it's God's will, not our will,
[G] but if it's [Bm] God's will,
[B] [E] we'll sing [B] 64 more years.
[Bm]
And [Bm] whenever you hear the [Bm] hummingbirds
going anywhere [B] to lift up the main Jesus in song,
you know what we're doing?
[Bm] We're just [Bm] moving on.
I'm just moving on.
[B] Move on.
I'm [B] just moving on.
Move on.
[B] I'm just [G#] moving on.
[G#m] Moving to the place [Bm] where [B] I belong.
I'm just moving on.
