[Eb] [G] [C] [Ab]
Thank [Eb] you, Bill.
[Ab] [Eb]
[C] You know, for many years, country music and country artists
didn't make much of an impact [Em] outside the USA.
[F] But I'm happy to say that [C] we've broadened our horizons
and country is [G] really starting to catch on in Europe and Asia
[C] and lots of other places.
Garth Brooks just did sell-out [Em] concerts in Dublin and in [F] Denmark
and Australia and [C] New Zealand,
and he couldn't [G] be here tonight because he's [C] performing in Berlin.
And tomorrow night, [G] Willie Nelson is on the road again in [C] Belfast.
Lyle Lovett and Mary Chapin Carpenter are [G] just back from England.
And Tanya Tucker, Ricky Van [C] Shelton and Little Texas
just did some big [F] shows in Switzerland.
[G] And next week, the Charlie [Am] Daniels Band and the Bellamy Brothers
are headed [G] for somewhere in [Gb] Japan that I can't [Bm] pronounce.
[Gb] So far [G] this year, nearly 50 country stars have done more [C] than 200 shows
in 22 countries [F] around the world.
And this very CMA [C] telecast will be seen as far away as Saudi [G] Arabia.
I personally think that's great, don't [C] you?
And I'm out of breath reading all [F] that.
[B] [F] [C] [G] And I'm real proud to be [C] part of this wonderful show tonight,
all these pretty clothes and [Em] big hairdos.
And yes, that is [Eb] Allison Krauss and Suzanne Cox
and my Tennessee Mountain [Em] Homeboys that are going to [A] help me out tonight.
[D] And I'm going to do a song that [N] I wrote for Emmylou Harris
about 17 or 18 years ago, and I never had a chance to record it.
And those songwriters out there like Merle Haggard,
well, you know how much it means to you for other people to sing you songs.
Of course, when Emmy did this particular song,
I kind of started a real nice little bank account.
Of course, last year when Whitney Houston did
I Will Always Love You, I bought the bank.
Bless her heart!
Anyway, I'm glad that Emmylou loved this song,
and I just recorded a new album called Heart Songs,
and this particular song is in that album.
So here it [Ab] goes.
[Eb] [Ab]
Mama never seemed to miss the finer things in life
If she did, she never did say [Eb] so to Daddy
She never wanted to be more than mother
If she did, she never did say [Ab] so to Daddy
The only thing that seemed to be important in her life
Was to make our house a home and [Db] make us happy
And Mama never did [Ab] any more than what she had
[Eb] If she did, she never did say [Ab] so to Daddy
He often left her all alone
She didn't mind the staying home
If she did, she never did say so [Eb] to Daddy
And she never missed the flowers and the gifts he never gave her
If she did, she never did say [Ab] so to Daddy
Cause being took for granted was a thing that she accepted
And she didn't need those things to [Db] make her happy
She didn't even seem to notice [Ab] that he didn't kiss and hold her
[Eb] If she did, she never did say [Ab] so to Daddy
Till [Db] one morning just to find a note
That Mama carefully wrote and [Eb] left to Daddy
And [Db] as he began to read it, our ears could not believe it
The words that she had written [Eb] there to Daddy
[Ab] She said the kids are old enough
And they don't need me very much
So I've gone in search for love I [Db] need so badly
I have needed you so [Ab] long but I just can't keep holding on
She never meant to come back [Eb] home
If she did, she never did say [Db] so to Daddy
Though Mama's gone
[Ab] Goodbye Daddy
