Shall we kick it off?
I think we should kick it off.
How about I kick you?
You can kick me.
I'll speak much louder.
You're out of reach.
That's the name of the song.
You're out of reach.
I'll get out of your reach.
[Db]
[Bbm] [Ab] [Bbm]
[Db] [Gb] I [Bbm] remember actually
[Db] this song.
I was sitting [Db] in the background
[Bbm] and John was playing some chords.
Right.
And then you fed off of that
[D] and you started to
Am I remembering this correctly?
I think so.
Or was that the day I was drinking heavily?
Well, let's forget about that.
I think I'm remembering it correctly.
You guys started doing the same.
We kind of all left you alone.
We came back in.
Did you
Yeah, we got into a little vibe.
John was playing some very nice open chords.
We were [Am] just kind of
Everybody was just [Eb] getting into the studio.
I think John was here first.
[G] I walked over to my keyboard.
I [Bb] was inspired by the chords he was [A] playing.
I started to kind of join [C] in.
I came up with a [E] further chord
that inspired John.
The next thing you [Fm] know,
it wasn't more [G] than half an hour
[Eb] before we kind of had something.
We were like,
wow, that came together quickly.
It was one of those fairly magical
moments together
where things just kind of gel
and we had something really [C] nice.
What was cool to me about the song
is that sometimes these things
that come together quickly
are just so natural and so musical.
They're not overthought.
This is an example of that.
But what's nice about the song to me is that
there's, in addition to a nice melody,
there's kind of a piano
motif that
is a melody unto itself.
So those kind of elements
[Eb] that come together
sound really, [N] really nice.
It sort of brings it even,
the feeling and the way that it hits you
is much deeper because of that.
I remember hearing it
and I remember immediately thinking
I better put my name in the hat
to write the lyric for this
because it struck me [F] very strong.
I really felt
moved by it.
With that being said,
when I wrote the lyrics to this,
which is now
entitled Out of Reach,
it's funny because
[Fm] it's similar [N] to just listening
to what John was saying about
Untethered Angel and his lyrical
approach to overcoming fear.
That's basically
what this person,
this girl in this lyric
is dealing with is that she's been
knocked down so many times that,
it doesn't matter
about the gender, everyone can relate
to it, but about being able to pick
yourself up and overcoming fear.
Recapturing the magic
and the true essence of life and being able
to take that to another
level where you feel very much
connected and positive.
I just felt that
the chordal [Fm] progressions in this really lent themselves
to that kind of feel
or that kind of expression.
[Bb] It came together well.
Go ahead.
[D] One of the things that I had fun with
with this song is that, although it's
ballad and pretty mellow,
I enjoyed
putting some of the orchestration to it,
especially, although it's extremely subtle, there's [Eb] a new
[C] virtual instrument that I got that is
a choir kind of instrument.
You can type in words
and you can have the choir sing the [Eb] words.
There's a little special stuff
going on [A] behind the
scenes that people can [D] listen for.
I won't give it away.
One of the miracles of
technology [Eb] today is you can do that.
You [D] can just use that to do
all the vocals for the album?
There you go.
We're actually capturing your timbre
and I can type in the words and just make it
sound like you.
[C] Perfect.
I'll be on the phone.
On the pirate ship.
[Bbm] Alright.
It's a deal.
[Db] Cool.
