Hey, how's it going?
Hope all is well today
We're gonna do a one guitar strumming version of the hit song by the cars drive
And this is from their 1984 their fifth studio record heartbeat City now in the original recording
There's not a lot of guitars right it's mostly synthesizers and keyboards
But we're gonna transcribe it for guitar and the big thing is the song is in the key of B major
So they're playing like a major to a major seventh chord and that might be hard for you to do those bar [F#] chords you want
To get to them eventually, but for now.
Let's do it like this.
Let's put a capo
At the second fret and this way the voicings will be much easier for you to play so standard tuning
Low to high e ad g BNE capo at the second fret song basically just has three parts
There's the intro which is the same as the verses and then there's choruses, and then there's a little instrumental break first
Let's go over all the chords.
You're gonna need to play now
I'm gonna give you the voicings in relationship to the capo so you need an a major [B] shape _
And then you're gonna need an a major 7 and that a to a major 7 and then back to a that's a big part
Of the song [G#m] you're gonna need enough sharp minor
[C#] You're also gonna need B major and if that B major voicing is a [D] little hard to voice try a B [G#] suspended second
It's a little richer fuller, and it's a little easier [C#] to voice now.
[B] You're also gonna need an
a chord but [F#] with an e open so that's like an a [B] over e and _
_ [D#] Also, you're gonna need an e sixth chord
[D#m] Really nice rich chord now all you do to play that is play your E major chord and then add the sixth up top
So add your pinky on that second fret [F] on that sixth on the B string
[D#m] It's C sharp minor
for that instrumental part [F#] D [E] major
[F#] and E major
And if you're having some trouble with like that F sharp minor chord
You know or bar chords in general or changing from bar chords open chords open the bars
I could really help you with that click on the link in YouTube description box below.
I'll send you a killer free video lesson

That'll really get your chord changing blasted to the next level
I'll pair it with an ebook also which has more chord charts in it more techniques more exercises
So it's a killer one-two punch, and it'll really help you along with your guitar journey
So I'll send you a video lesson ebook for free just click on that link below so the song starts with an intro
Which is the same exact progression that they use in the verses [B] and all it is is an a chord to an a major seven
And then back to a and then a you do twice
Let me play you the intro and then I'll go [F#] back and explain the rhythm pattern and by the way the strumming pattern will use
The same pattern throughout the whole song so here's the intro [B] and the verses
_ _ _ [D#m] _ _ _ [B] _ _
_ _ _ Then repeats _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
[F] Who's gonna tell you when that's when in the [B] first verse comes in so all we're doing is we're playing an a major chord
And then we're going to an a major seven
And then we're going back to a for two measures, and then that whole thing repeats twice
[F] All right, and the rhythm pattern so let's do a strum like this down down down
_ When you [N] have more complex drums you break them up into smaller pieces it makes it easier to digest so three downs and
Then straight eighth notes [D#] up down up down down put it all together
Down [E] down down down [F] down down [F#] down down down down
_ [F] _ _ [F#m] _ _
Right [F#] that kind of captures the feel of the song remember.
There's really not much guitar in here.
It's all synthesizers right keyboards
So here it [B] is slow
_ _ change _
Then twice on the a _ _ _ _
[F#] Okay, and that's the intro and the [N] verses
It's the same exact thing verse one he goes through that progression twice verse two he does the progression four times
So he just doubles it I can't sing in this key, but I'll just say the words
You can just hear how the chords change it [B] sounds like this
Who's gonna [D#m] tell you when a major seventh?
[B] It's too late.
Okay for two _
Start over who's gonna tell you things
_ Aren't so great a
_ _ _ _ [G#m] _ [F#] Right there you can't go on it goes into [N] the chorus and if you could do me a huge favor

So let me play the [D#] chorus of the song we're gonna use the same strum pattern that we [F#] did in the intro on the verse
Is right, we'll take it right from that f-sharp minor.
You can't go [G#m] on it will sound like this
_ _ [G#] _ _ _ _ [G#m] _
_ [C#] _ _ _ [B] _ _ _ [F#] _
_ _ [B] _ _ _ _ _ _
verse 2
You up?
[G#] Okay.
So the chorus is [G#m] just f-sharp minor.
I can't go [C#] on B or play B says [G#] to on
[G#m] Thinking f-sharp minor [C#] nothing's beat wrong
[F] Then you go to that a chord [F#] but over the e open e straight who's gonna drive you home on home
E6 [B] to night a night you go to that a chord and you play that a twice through the strum two measures and
[F] That's the chorus and then after the chorus it goes into verse two is gonna pick you up when you fall
And you go through the progression four times which goes into the second chorus now the second chorus goes into an instrumental part
Which you can play on guitar just the chords but at the end of the second course
Here's an easy [F#] way to think about it.
Did you the first course goes [B] e6 to a
This time you [F#] play that e6 chord and the a we're gonna start off the instrumental section [F#] with so let me play you the
Instrumental section it's right after the second course
So I'll take the last line of the second course the who's gonna drive you home tonight and watch how that e6 goes into that
A again, but the a starts the instrumental section so [B] it'll sound like this
_ _ _ [F#] _ _ _
[B] _ _ _ [G#m] _ _ _ [B] _ _
_ [G#m] _ _ _ [D#m] _ _ _ [B] _
_ _ _ _ _ [F#] _ _ _
[B] _ Right into verse three
[N] And that's who's gonna hold you down.
Okay, so the end of that second [F#] course you do the a over e
[D#m] 6 and then you go right [B] to the instrumental section, which is this a sitting strum pattern a
_ F sharp [G#m] minor _ [B] back to a _ [G#m] back to F sharp minor _ now you're gonna go to C [D#m] sharp minor
_ [E] G major
_ [B] _ That a over e chord again
_ [F#] then E major
_ [B] _ And we're into verse three
Verse [E] three is the who's gonna hold you down when you shake that goes into the final chorus outro
One change on that final course outro you play that progression twice
So it's like a double chorus
But the first time when it goes to that e6 to the a the a chord you just play for one measure and then it starts
Over again on that F sharp.
You can't go on
And then the last time to end the song it goes a over [B] e the last line of the song
_ To [F#] that e6 back [B] say a but this time
Three times play today and
Then [B] last time you play that a three times through the strum the last time you just hit it once more on a downstroke
Let it ring and the song ends and that's it.
[N] That's drive by the cars.
