[D] _ _ _ Dwayne Skydawg Allman was certainly one of the [Dm] greatest guitarists of his [D] era.
_ [Dm] Born Howard Dwayne Allman in Nashville on [G] November 20, 1946 [Dm] he was also a very [D] respected session musician.
_ _ _ Alongside his brother, Greg Allman, he founded the classic band [A] Allman Brothers Band in Jacksonville,
Florida in [Bm] [Dm] 1969. _
_ _ _ [D] As session musician both before and during his tenure [Gm] with the [D] band, Dwayne Allman performed
with such established stars as King [Dm] Curtis, [Bm] Aretha Franklin, Herbie Mann, [Dm] Wilson Pickett,
and Boz Skaggs.

[D] _ Dwayne Allman's skills as a guitarist were complemented by personal qualities such as
his intensity, drive and ability [Dm] to draw the best out of others in making music.
_ _ [Am] _ _ [D] _ _ Dwayne Allman was the elder son of Willis Allman and Geraldine Allman.
His brother, Greg, was born on December [Bb] 8, 1947.
[G] On December 26, [B] 1949, when the family was living near Norfolk, Virginia, Willis Allman was [Dm] murdered.
[D] To retrain as an accountant, [Am] Geraldine sent Dwayne and Greg to Castle Heights Military
[C] Academy [D] in Lebanon, [Dm] Tennessee, which they [Bm] both [Bb] disliked intensely.

In [E] 1957, the family [D] moved to Daytona Beach, Florida, where the boys attended Seabreeze High School.
The [B] boys [Em] returned to Nashville [Bm] to spend [G] summers with their grandmother, and there Greg learned
guitar basics from a neighbor.
[D] The boys became musically inspired by a rhythm and blues concert where they saw blues guitar
legend B.B. King perform.
Dwayne began to [Bm] learn to play [Bb] slide guitar [D] on his birthday in [Am] 1968.
He was recovering from [D] an injury to his left elbow, caused in a fall from a horse.
Greg brought him a birthday present, the debut album by [G] Taj Mahal, and a bottle of quericidin pills.
Dwayne had poured the pills out of the [Gb] quericidin bottle, [D] washed off the label and was using
it as a slide to play along with the album track [E] Statesboro Blues. _
[D] The song became a part of the Allman Brothers Band's repertoire, and Dwayne's slide guitar
became crucial to their sound.

_ _ _ [Dm] _ _ The Allman Brothers Band went on to [G] become one of the most influential rock [F] groups of
the 1970s.
[Dm] Their debut album, The Allman Brothers Band, was recorded in New [G] York in September 1969
[F] and released a few [D] months later.

[D] _ After a concert [F] in Miami, watched by [D] Eric Clapton, Dwayne Allman was invited to the [Fm] studio.
According [Dm] to Clapton, they were [E] inseparable during those recording sessions.
[Dm] Allman and Clapton jammed all night, [F] finding they had a [Am] deep and [Dm] instinctive rapport.
[Am] Eric [Gm] played the Fender [C] parts and Dwayne played the Gibson parts.
They had the track for Layla.
[Gm] Dwayne came in and [Dm] added five notes to that and set fire to the whole thing.
Dwayne participated in the recording of most of the album's tracks, contributing some
of his best-known work.
He never left the Allman [E] Brothers Band, though, [C] despite being offered a permanent position [G] with Clapton.
[Dm] _ _ _ [Am] The Allman Brothers went on to record [Dm] at Fillmore East in March 1971.
_ [C] Meanwhile, Dwayne continued contributing session [Dm] work to other artists' albums whenever he could.
Allman was well known for his melodic, extended and attention-holding guitar [F] solos.

[D] As Allman's [Dm] distinctive electric bottleneck sound began to [C] mature, it evolved into the
[F] musical voice [Cm] of what would come to be known [Gm] as Southern [Dm] Rock, being picked up by other
slide guitarists. _
[G] _ _ [F] Dwayne Allman was killed in a [Dm] motorcycle crash shortly after the release and initial success
of At Fillmore [G] East.
On October [F] 29, 1971, [D] while the band was on a break from touring and recording, [Bb] Dwayne
had been visiting the band's [Dm] big house to wish Linda Oakley a happy birthday.
Shortly after leaving the house he swerved to avoid a truck which was moving in the same [G] direction.
[D] The cycle skidded and [C] turned over, apparently pinning Allman [Am] underneath as it traveled another 50 feet.

_ [D] Allman's funeral service was held on Monday, November 1, [Dm] 1971, at Snow's Memorial Chapel
in Macon, [Am] Georgia.

In the chapel, packed with family [G] and friends, many of the [Dm] musicians who had been part of
Allman's life were in attendance to mourn his death. _ _ _ _
_ [G] _ _ [Am] _ _ [Dm] After Allman's funeral and some weeks of mourning, the five surviving members of the Allman Brothers
[Am] band carried on, [G] resuming live performances and finishing the [F] recording work interrupted
by Allman's [Dm] death.
They named their next album Eat a Peach.
Released as a [G] double album [A] in February [F] 1972, it contains [Dm] a side of live in studio tracks
with Dwayne, two sides of Mountain [G] Jam, recorded with Allman at the same time as At Fillmore
East in [Dm] March, and a side of [G] tracks by the [C] surviving five members of the band.
[D] _ [G] Dwayne Allman [D] is well remembered by his slide guitar technique and [Dm] creative improvisation skills.

in the South.
