about this movie.
It's a pleasure to welcome them for the first time on our show.
Here's Dwight Yocum.
[Dm]
[A] [Bb] [C] [F] Good [Dm] [A] morning.
[N]
It's a new Dwight Yocum.
Without the hat.
We're so used to seeing these
the country singers in their hats.
Well you can't sing without your hat I understand,
but you don't act with it.
Is that true?
Not in this movie.
And I've worn a hat and a couple
of other things I've done.
I did a film Roswell where I played a rancher if it was appropriate
role.
All of a sudden you're getting great reviews for your acting ability.
Well knock wood.
I mean
this this was a great opportunity.
The writer and director Billy Bob Thornton is tremendously
talented and I was extremely
you saw him in the lead role as Carl and he had seen me do a
short.
He did a short version of it.
It was originally a one-man stage play that he created
and did in LA for a couple years.
And as the character Carl telling that monologue in the
film where he discusses what happened to him and he said I've got this character.
He is the
antagonist.
He said but there's a little you know movement in this character that you won't be used
to.
And it certainly had enormous relief to it and it drew me into wanting to do this
part.
And you had to act like a bad musician too.
Well you know what it's not hard to play bad.
That wasn't tough.
But there was one line in a Variety review that really caught my eye.
I
repeated I wrote it down here.
In a business full of singers who think they can act and actors who
think they can sing it's refreshing to find one who could do it both very very well.
[D] [G] [C] [D] [G] [C]
[N] Okay.
Dwight Yoakam I guess you may recognize him without his hat.
Oh there he is.
It's the tight jeans I can't get over that he's not wearing today.
That must be a relief.
How tight are they Dwight?
They're so tight.
That no they're actually they're just off the rack those jeans.
They're not tightened or anything.
Ah they're not made for high notes.
Just old Levi's and then you know they're not made for
high notes.
Because I feel like buying myself a pair of tight jeans.
A guy like me should be seen.
The tighter the better for a guy like me.
Maybe that next role you're in what was what was the
thing you did?
District attorney on life's work.
Yes yes.
Great.
In fact Martin Scorsese is on the
phone right now.
Excuse me he might well be after he sees this.
All right.
You lost out on that Notre
Dame coaching job.
Did you see that game you were out there weren't you on the coach?
I was there but
I didn't I didn't watch the game.
It saved John Robinson's job but if the man lost six games he
beat Notre Dame he keeps his job.
That's what it means to beat Notre Dame.
I was still I was still
in mourning over Ohio State's loss to Michigan.
How about that?
Why do they lose every year to
Michigan?
Well never mind that's another whole topic.
I guess we won't be seeing a clip from
the movie.
We better go back.
You played you played in Ohio State right?
How about we go see a little clip from that?
In and out.
It's a great movie and people would probably.
All right here we go.
Sling Blade all right now it's kind of a difficult movie to explain.
Just we don't need to I don't think.
All right fine let's take a look at it now.
Here's Doyle who is
played by Dwight.
Let's Carl play by this Billy Bob.
He's mildly retarded remember that.
And Frank
let and know that he is the head of the household.
Okay a scene from Sling Blade.
You're gonna learn
to live by my rules.
The first rule is you don't speak once you're spoken to you got me?
And you stay the hell out of my way.
And do what a regular kid does.
You're a weird little Frank and I
don't get you.
So wake up and face what they call reality.
See we're gonna be a family Frank.
My family.
I'll be paying all the bills.
So that means you're stuck with my ass.
But I ain't your
daddy.
You just act like I am.
And the other thing I say is your buddy Carl here is going.
We can't be no normal family with him living in a garage and coming in a damn bedroom at
four in the morning carrying hammers.
Carl can stay if he wants to.
Mama said.
Mister don't you never lay another hand on that boy.
You understand?
Wow it's really such a powerful film.
It has so many different and again it's it's it's uh
an enormous debt of gratitude on my part and on the part of the entire cast is out to Billy Bob
Thornton for allowing us to participate in something that was so uh profoundly heartfelt
and and as you and I were saying off camera this this story deals with the subject of [Eb] of family
violence in a way that I think is graphically real and honest.
Not not glamorized and not not over
[N] dramatized to the point that it that uh is you know leaves reality.
So there's not a cliche.
No that's yeah the vernacular of the south that he's
involved in you know the way he writes is so honest and and and avoids any cliche yeah.
Lucas Black is is everybody's friend and he's John Ritter.
