What is going [N] on everyone?
I had some requests from different people to do some harmonic minor style licks, and
I love the harmonic minor scale, but I honestly don't use it that much because of the minor
scales, and it's very close to the harmonic minor scale, is I like to use the Hungarian minor scale.
And it's almost like, to me, like a forgotten scale.
I don't see a lot of people use it, or talk about it or anything.
And it's real close to the harmonic minor scale, there's just one note different, but
it gives it this real cool, like to me it sounds darker even.
So on the [Em] harmonic minor scale, you've got the [Gbm] E, the [B] F sharp, the G, and you [A] go [B] A, B,
[C] C, then [Eb] what is this?
D sharp, [Em] E.
Okay, so there's your notes.
The only difference from harmonic to Hungarian is you raise the fourth.
So that A [F] note, that's your fourth, you raise it up one [Eb] half step
[Bb] to that A sharp.
And it's cool because it gives you this half step, half step, half step pattern.
And you don't see that in a lot of scales.
[C]
[G]
[Em] Okay, I'm just going to [Am] play the first lick slow, and then I'll explain it.
[B]
[Cm] [B]
[C]
[G] [Ebm] [E]
[Eb]
[C] [B]
[Em]
Okay, so what you're doing here
[B] is you've got what I would call a pedal, because you're
just repeating the same three notes over and over again with different tones passing by basically.
So what you [Dm] have is on the B string, you have the 11th fret, 12th fret, [B] 13th fret, [Cm]
and that's
like the staple Hungarian minor shape right there.
[Eb] [F]
Okay, so then after you do the 11, 12, 13 [B] on the B, [Cm] then you hit the 12th fret on the
[B] high E, [C]
and I do that by barring my middle finger, and then you walk back down the B
string, [Gm]
so, [C] [Bb]
[Eb] then you walk back up it.
So [E] I'll just do [A] the first one a couple times, so it sounds like [B] this.
[C]
Okay, and each time, instead of just playing that same high E note, [E]
I change it.
So I start on the 12th fret, then I go to the 11th [B] fret.
[F] [Cm]
Okay, then after that, I [B] go to the 15th fret, [C] and [Cm]
[G] then I finish up on the 14th fret.
So [A] all together, slow, that sounds like [C] this.
[Cm]
[C]
[Cm]
[C]
[G] [N]
[E] Okay, the second lick I'm going to show you, it's still E Hungarian minor, is, I can't
play it fast yet because I actually [N] stumbled across this while I was doing this video of
just the first lick.
So it uses almost all the same notes as the first lick, but you're going to be on the
lower strings, and it's got a different feel to it.
So you start this [E] one off on the 12th fret E, and you're still going to have that repeating
kind of like half-step, half-step pattern.
[G] Then you go 13, 14, 15.
[C] Okay,
[Em] but you don't walk it back down ever.
It just goes on the low E, then 13, [C] 14, 15 on the A, and then you go to the 11th fret
on the [Eb] low E, then 13, 14, [C] 15 on the A.
[Db] And then, this is the part that was throwing me off, is you have to hit the 14th fret on
the low E, [E] and you can do it by [Gb] shifting up.
[C] [E]
But I would honestly [B] recommend trying to use your ring finger, [F] because it feels real odd,
and usually when things feel odd like that, it's something that I feel like I need to work on.
So the way [Em] I play it is I go like this.
[Eb] [B] [Cm] [Gb] [C]
[Fm] Okay, so after you hit that [Gb] 14, you go back to [Em] your E.
So it kind of feels like you play
this one twice.
So you go 12, [Eb] 11, [B] [C] [Gb] 14, [C] 12, 12.
Okay, so I'll play the whole thing slow a couple times for you, but this one's really cool.
Like I said, I'm still working on it, because I literally came up with it like 10 minutes
ago, but I wanted to put it in the video, because it felt so odd for my fingers doing
this pattern in the scale.
So here it is all put together.
[Ebm]
[B] [C] [Ebm]
[C]
[B] There's two new picking [N]
exercises.
I'm going to be posting a lot more of these videos, and they're not all going to be picking exercises.
I have some legato and sweeping, and just different arpeggio ideas and everything.
So come back and check out my other videos and everything.
I'm trying to do a lot more, because these videos, I hope, are helping people, but they're
also really helping me try to keep thinking of stuff.
