[C] I'd like to share with you a few songs that I composed.
This [D] first one I [Eb] wrote out at sea.
I was fortunate [Bbm] to be part [Bb] of a crew [Am] of Makali'i.
[Eb] Makali'i is a double-hulled voyaging canoe from Kaua'i High, Hawaii.
[C] And I learned a lot, and I learned my way on the voyage to [Bb] go between Hawaii and [D] Micronesia
[Eb] to honor Mau Pia'i.
He is a Grand Master Navigator [Bb] from Micronesia, [N] on the island of Sato.
[Em] It's actually an atoll.
[Gb] And this was [Em]
our [A] way of showing [Em] Mau that he taught us well.
[Abm] We could [E] bring him home and navigate him [N] home with [E] our navigator's pass.
[Ebm] I was very [Gb] honored to be part of that crew.
[C]
And after the legs that [E] I was on [C] were over, I got to [Gb] ride on the Coast Guard [C] clutter
of [Abm] Micronesia, and that was called the New Hindus.
So that gave us [Dbm] more time to just [Abm] not have to be on watch, [B] watching the wind and the ocean [Eb] [Db] swells.
[E] [Gbm] So that gave us some time to just play our instruments [Ab] [B] and kind of [Eb] reevaluate and [Dbm]
be
[Gb] able to reflect upon our experience.
So this is a [B] song of reflection [A] written in the middle of the sea.
I don't know what [N] degree I was at, longitude or latitude, but it was somewhere [B]
between
Chuk [Am] and Palau.
[B] This is a [A] song called E Mau E.
E Mau [Db] means to continue, [Abm] and Mau is the name of the [N] Grandmaster Navigator as well.
So this was one [E] way that I could show [Ebm]
him directly my [B] appreciation for all that [Ebm] he's
done for [Dbm] not only the [B] Hawaiian people, but the people [E] of Palau and the Indian world for
helping us to [Ebm] rediscover our [Dbm] sacred traditions.
[Eb] This is something, instead of writing a journal, [B] I wrote with [E] strings.
