Alright, Beastie Boys up in this piece, Sabotage.
I've gotten quite a few requests for this song, so [N] I'm going to show you how to play that.
Anyway, I'm Finbar of Finbar Bass.
Please click on my little free bass lessons right down there.
They're not on YouTube at all, some inner sanctum lessons for you, completely free,
three of them in all.
And let's roll right into the Beastie Boys up in this.
[Ab]
Oh man, once you start playing this, you can't stop.
Anyway, what you're doing there is basically you're keeping your hand in the same position
throughout that whole riff that he does through the song.
And what you're doing there, it may look like I'm playing quite a few notes here, but really
you're only playing two.
And a lot of times you're only playing one.
And you know that you're playing the song pretty well when you're only playing one when
you're supposed to be playing one and a bunch of other stuff isn't ringing out.
So and this is the way I do it.
You know, other [A] people do it differently, but this [N] is my favorite way of playing Sabotage.
So what you're going to do is you're going to take your thumb and all that does is I
just mute the top E string with that.
Remember like in a lot of my tutorials I talk about muting.
It's very important to mute strings just as important it is to get a nice tone when you're
playing a note.
You want to be able to mute them too.
So anyway, you're muting this with your thumb, top E string, hook your thumb over there.
And it's interesting actually, [E] you know, if you're a perfectionist, if you mute too high
up on that string, see that?
That's not really [Gb] like a mute.
Mute it way back here because then you're not going to [G] get much [D] sound out of that E
string when you're, if you're, you know, playing on [E] it.
If you mute it too far down, you're going to hit that harmonic [A] every time and that's
going to sound odd.
Maybe you want to keep that in because you think it sounds cool.
Anyway, then what you're going to do is, keep your thumb up here, you're going to put your
middle finger on [Ab] this, oh sorry, 11th fret of the A string.
And that is pretty much going to be anchored down there for the entire riff, right?
So just hold it down right there.
This finger, my pointer finger, I'm making kind of a bar with that and all I'm doing
with that is I'm muting these two strings.
So when I'm not playing, those get [N] muted and that's the D and the G string right there.
So just mute that with those, mute those with that.
And then you are going to be playing with your third finger, this 11th fret of the G
[Ab] string, but you're playing it off and on, right?
Now that's one pattern I just showed you there.
That's [Ab] the standard pattern is you're [Gb] going to strum two wick-wack, right?
Two muted strums and then hit that.
[Gb] See what I'm doing there is I'm hitting, then I'm strumming two mutes, [Ab] then hitting again.
And hitting down with that 11th fret of the G string.
I'll try and maybe exaggerate a little bit.
Now notice when I'm not hitting it, when I'm just strumming, you're basically only hearing
one note play and that's my middle finger on the 11th fret of the A string.
If I played that alone, see that?
And then when you start with your third finger, just like that.
And when you're strumming this, you're pretty much going to keep your strumming hand going.
Just like that.
So a lot of times during the song he's not playing that particular pattern.
He mixes it up.
I mean, you hear it throughout the song.
He's doing all kinds of different things.
To me it even sounds like he throws in this 13th fret of the G string sometimes.
[Gb] And you can throw it in if you want just for fun anyway.
The other part of [F] the song that will be familiar to you is this run that he [Bm] does.
[A] And that's very simple.
All he's doing [Gm] there is you start on the fourth fret of the E, then go to the sixth fret,
[E] fourth fret of the A, sixth fret, and then fourth fret of the D.
[Eb] [Gb] Now you [Ab] would think after that he goes to the sixth fret of the D string.
[A] Something like that.
But it sounds like to me that [G] he's going back to the sixth fret of the A string.
[Gb]
[Bb] So you don't go
You go
[Ebm] [Ab] And after that you're going to hit the fourth fret of the [Gb] G.
[Bm] [Eb]
Just like that.
[B] [N] And then you're going to go back into that riff I just showed you.
Dude, I love the video to this song.
Have you ever seen it?
I'm a big fan of the old 70s grungy detective story.
You know, Dirty Harry and all the old 70s TV show detective stuff too.
It's a total super funny spoof on all that.
Like what are they doing?
They're just basically running around most of the time.
Do they have guns?
I don't know.
They're chasing people.
Anyway, put the distortion up for this song.
Turn it up.
This is kind of the go-to song for bass distortion.
When you're trying out a new amp or something like that.
You're trying to distortion on a Sans amp or something like that.
You definitely want to play this.
So anyway, I am Finbar of Finbar Bass.
