[F] [Eb] Hey there, HD [Cm] Piano fans.
Jeff [Eb] here.
In today's lesson, I am very honored to be teaching you all [F] a song [Eb] by one of the most
innovative, inspiring, [Bb] and giving artists of our time, Prince.
We here at HD Piano couldn't think of a more fitting way to honor his legacy than by teaching
his beautiful ballad, Purple Rain.
So we're going to start with this one with the verse, which is going to sound like this.
[Gm]
[F] [Eb]
[Bb] [Gm]
[F] [Bb]
And that's it for the verse.
Let's go over those chords first.
Here's our first chord.
We call this a Bbsus2, or suspended two.
Our bass notes, octave Bbs.
Then we have an F, Bb.
Here's middle C, and another F.
Bbsus2.
Then [Gm] we're going to go down to, call this a Gm7 with an 11 [G] on it.
So that's octave Gs in the left hand.
[Bb] F, Bb, [F] middle C, and F.
Notice it's the same right hand as the [Bb] previous chord.
All we move [Gm] is the bass.
Two really [Bb] beautiful chords.
[Gm] Bbsus2, Gm7, add 11.
Next chord is [F] F.
F in the left hand, F, A, C, F in the right hand.
And again, notice how little the [Bb] right hand moves.
Here's our previous chord.
All we have to [F] do is move our Bb down to A.
Love when that happens.
Nice, easy voice leading, we call that.
So that's our third chord.
[Eb] And then we move to this chord, which is an Ebadd2.
Again, Eb octaves in the left hand, and a G, Bb, Eb, F in the right hand.
All right, let's go over those four chords.
Each of those chords, we're going to [F] play four times,
just as quarter notes [Bb] like this.
1, 2, 3, [Gm] 4, 1, 3, [F] 4, 2.
[Eb]
As you get more comfortable with the song,
you can start to experiment with the rhythm.
But to start, I'd recommend doing quarter notes.
It's a really nice feel.
[Bb] It'll work really great with a band or even solo piano singing.
So that's the first four measures.
Here's how the next four measures go.
We start with four quarter notes of our Bb suspended second.
[Gm] Then we go down to the G minor 7 11.
We play that four times again.
2, 3, 4.
And [F] then we get to our F chord again.
Here's what's a little tricky about this.
We play the F chord six times.
It's a measure of 6 4.
So we've been in 4 4, and now we have a measure of 6 4.
So let's try that together.
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.
And [Bb] then right after that, we go to a new chord,
which is just a regular Bb major chord.
Bb in the left, F, Bb, D, F in the right.
And when we play that chord, we just hit it on beat 1.
And then rest, 3, 4.
And that's going to take us right to the chorus.
OK, let's try this verse a couple times together.
We're going to start on our Bb sus 2.
1, 2, 3, [Gm] 4, G minor 7, [F]
Eb, [Eb] add 2.
Back to the Bb [Bb] suspended 2nd, G minor [Gm] 7, add 11.
Now we get to our F, which we play six [F] times.
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, [Bb] 1, [Ab] 2, 3, 4.
[Eb] And chorus happens right here.
And there you have it, everyone. Great work.
