Hi, this is Eddie Collins, [N] and today I would like to show you a version of Sally Gooden.
It will start off very simple and we'll show you how to evolve it into something that even
Bill Monroe would be proud of.
Let's first take a look at the basic melody of Sally Gooden.
It begins on beat four, so you would count three beats.
One, [F#m] two, three, [A] four and [B] one.
[A#] [B] And the other thing to note is the down and up picking.
Since it's eighth notes, we start down.
[A] [B] [A#m] [A#] Right there is a downstroke.
It's a quarter note, so [D#] it will be followed by another [B] downstroke.
[F#] [B]
[F#m] [E] [F#m] [Am]
[D] [E] There at the end, very important that it finishes on an upstroke.
One and [F#] two and [Am] three and.
[B]
[A] [B]
[A] [F#]
[A] And moving on to part B, it will begin with three downstrokes.
[F#]
[E] This will be an [A] upstroke.
[A#] [F#]
[F#m]
[A#]
[A]
[D] [C#] [A#] [Em]
[F#m] [A#]
[N] Let's now talk about adding some drone strings to [Am] the basic melody.
When we do that, we're going to be hitting two strings at the same time.
And the idea is to find a balance as you're doing your down and upstrokes to where that
drone string, the open first string, doesn't override the melody.
So nice and loose in the wrist, [A] [E]
[D] [F#] right there my drone string moves to [Bm] the second string
[D#] A as I go down to get the fourth fret on the third string.
[A] [E] [D] [A]
[D] [A]
[D]
[A] Same thing will work when you go to part B.
So those notes right off the top are the downstrokes.
[E] [D] [A] [A#]
Let's now add another layer to Sally Gooden.
Beyond just the drone strings, we are going to hold [C] a pair of notes, which will be the
pinky on the seventh fret of the third string and the ring finger on the sixth fret of the fourth string.
Those will blend in nicely with the two [A] open strings.
And the trick now is to play the rest of the melody with fingers one and two while you're holding that.
It would go like this.
[F#m] That's your trickiest [N] move right there that you were holding finger four and three and
then you have to come down and get this second finger [F#] note.
[A]
The same thing will work as well for part B.
Alright, we hope you've enjoyed learning Sally Gooden in this version.
In a minute I'll play the entire piece [C] and if you'd like to see the tablature [A#] for this
basic version, it's posted at my [A] website.
So good luck with your picking.
