[N] What happened, because I feel it was time to happen, especially with the situation of the world today,
problems people are having, they don't believe in God anymore, a lot of people, they don't go to church,
and especially our youth, this generation today, is really messed up, confused, they don't know who to turn to,
which way to go, so they're trying this and that, and they're not finding satisfaction.
And I feel with young people such as our group, we can show them that God yet lives, and instead of us trying to take
the gospel to them maybe by preaching to them, take it to them in song maybe, with contemporary sounds, new beats, new rhythms,
and something they can understand, something they can feel and express themselves in.
A lot of them aren't going to church, so maybe we should just take the church to them.
Ed, what effect has all this sudden fame and fortune had on the young people in the choir and yourself?
Has it changed people at all?
I can't truthfully say that they've gone through many changes that you can outwardly see, and especially myself,
I can only speak for myself, I don't think I've changed, because I haven't really, I don't think it's yet hit me with full impact.
But it's a lot of excitement going on, and I'm very happy about it.
I feel that I can contribute something to the world if I'm allowed to.
Dorothy, why did you leave the Northern California State Youth Choir, or the Ed Hawkins Singer as the group is now known?
Well, my full potential of this thing was to sing and to be heard by someone that wanted to record me.
And this is what the whole thing is, so finally someone heard me, and this is my reason for leaving.
No hard feelings at all.
What are you going to do now, Dorothy?
Well, I intend to, I did sign a contract with Electra, and I will be singing with that company.
What about concert appearances?
Will you be available for those?
Yes, I believe so.
I will be doing solos, doing different, on different concerts.
Do you have plans to form a group of your own, or will you sing with different groups?
Well, I am available to sing with different choirs, you know, but I won't have anything, you know, a group of my own.
Are you going to stick to gospel, or will you follow in the footsteps of Aretha, perhaps, who came out of the choir and is the empress of soul today?
Well, I believe there's a lot of soul in the gospel, and I will stick to that, religious power.
You said there are no hard feelings.
Is that really true, there's no bitterness, even after all this hassle that's been going on for the past few weeks?
Right, I love them, and every time we see one another, we really hug and kiss and whatever, you know, so we, no hard feelings at all.
That's true.
Myself and Dorothy, we're yet good friends, as we were before, and Dorothy has gone out on her own, and the kids are happy about it.
If she's happy, I'm happy, and I wish her a lot of [Abm] success.
But you want to make it clear that the choir is still together, and you have some other people in it.
Right, right, such as Tremaine is a great soloist, Ruth Lyons, their soloist on the number called Joy Joy.
