[N] I am absolutely sick to death of hearing people playing this song wrong so today I'm going
to show you how to play it correctly.
This is Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple.
Let's
have a look at how it's played.
So Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple.
It's that song that
everybody learns.
It's the first song that everybody learns because it's the first thing
that people learn that just sounds like it should be something.
But people always play
it wrong.
Very very seldom have I ever come across anyone, any beginners that actually
play it correctly.
Everyone always learns [E] it [G] [A] [E] [Gm]
just because it sounds like something but
that is in no way, shape or form right.
The pattern is sort of correct but for all intents
and purposes the notes are wrong therefore it is wrong.
So this song is played on [D] the
middle two strings.
So you've got the D string [G] and the G.
And it's [E] actually finger picked.
[G]
So you play the two of them it makes a G chord.
Or a G power chord I don't know.
So you can
do this one of two, well you can do this a couple of ways.
It's usually finger picked
but you can use a plectrum no problem at all.
You just strum.
You can finger pick it by
using your thumb and your first finger and you do sort of a pinching motion.
The thumb
hits the D string and the first finger hits the G.
In a sort of a, when you put two of
them together it's like sort of a pinching.
Or what I do is sometimes is a mixture of
the both in that I hold my plectrum between my thumb and my first finger and that sort
of becomes the thumb and then my middle finger, excuse the expression, becomes the thing that
you pinch with.
So you do it like that.
Whatever way you want to do it, just as long as you're
playing the right notes that's the main thing.
Ok so a small bit of water is really really
simple.
You start off by fretting, or not fretting, by picking both strings open.
Then
you use, you can use two fingers if you like.
I tend to just use one to be honest and bar
them.
But then you just bar the two strings.
For those of you who don't know what barring
is it means holding down more than one string at the same time.
So you just hold down the
D and the G on the third fret.
So you do [Em] zero, [Gm] three.
Now you can either move up or what
I do is I use one of these fingers.
I can't really decide which.
For the purpose of this
I'm going to use the third finger.
So we do zero, three, [C] five.
[G] [F] Zero, [Db] three, with your
pinky.
Six, back to the third [C] finger, five.
Zero, three, five, [G] three, zero.
And it's really
no more complicated than that.
So here it is with just the pick.
[Bb] [C] [Gm] [Db] [C]
[Gm] [C] [Gm]
Here it is finger picked
with just my thumb and my first finger like I said.
[C] [G]
[Bb] [Db] [C] [F] That's another way of doing it is
that you can slide up and do [E] third [C] finger to [Gm] first finger.
There's all sorts of ways
that you can do it.
Just whatever makes the most sense to you.
[C] [Bb] [G] Or the way that I do it,
pick and middle finger.
[Bb] [C] [Gm] [Dbm] [C]
[G] And [C] [Gm] [G]
[N] of course there was a little mistake in there just because
I tried to be fancy adding in the little slidey thing there.
But hey ho.
So that's
basically it.
There's nothing more complicated about that song.
Of course there's way more
to that song than just the main riff.
But that's the part that people know.
And that's
the part that you're going to want to play starting off.
Now of course there's nothing
wrong in learning the pattern and playing it on any string.
It will work.
Of course
it will work.
But if you want to play the song right and do the song justice and not
just play it just for the sake of playing it and learning the pattern.
Do it the way
that I've just shown you.
So yeah.
