[Dm] Cool [Fm] jazz is [Em] much more [Ebm] subtle.
It [F] has to [Fm] be listened [G] to [Gb] [F] very carefully,
and you [Fm] have to know, [Em] you [Gb] have to be able to compare [F] it
[Fm] against [G] something else that you know.
[Ebm] [F] I took [D] a trip on [G] a train
[F] And I thought about you
[Bb] I passed a [D] shadowy lane
[Db] [F] And I thought about you
[Bb] [Dm] I thought about you was inspired by [Bb] Chad Baker,
and in [Cm] that sense it is a tribute to [Am] Chad.
[Bb] It was [C] a natural fit for me [Bb] to [Am] play, to sing music
inspired by [Ab] Chad, as I [C] am an instrumentalist
[Bb] and a singer, [E] as Chad was.
[Am] Stylistically they [Cm] share a similar approach
in the way that they make music.
There's a [F] certain [A] amount of [Dm] vulnerability,
a certain amount of intimacy, [C] an intimacy if you will,
[Bbm] the way that [F] they create [Eb] and the mood that they set.
Chad was [Dm] a romantic, and so am I.
[Ab] And the songs that I chose [Bb] talk [D] about love.
They all talk about [E] love, about different [F] aspects of love.
[D] Others talk about longing, talk [Eb] about the [Dm] loss of love.
[Fm] I chose 14 [G] songs that [Ebm] he [F] played or recorded
at one time [Fm] or another in [Am] his career,
[Abm] songs that I [Dm] feel that are good vehicles [Fm] for playing,
[Gm] also [Ebm] for improvising, [Fm] for singing.
I decided to do [D] them [Eb] [Ebm] in 2 [Bbm] different ways.
Halfway drums, half of the [Dbm] record without [C] drums.
Chad had this quote [Bbm] that he said,
it takes a great [Abm] drummer to be better than [Gb] no drummer at all.
[F] So you can bet [Db] that [F] [Bb] the 2 [G] drummers I have on the record [Ab] are great.
[Bb] [Ab] [Gm] I saw you last night and got [Bbm] that [Bb] old feeling
[Ab] When you came inside [B] I got that [Bb] old feeling
[Eb] The [Bm] moment that [Db] you danced by I [Bb] felt a thrill
[A] And [Eb] when you caught my [A] eye [Abm] my heart stood [Ab] still
[Bb] [C] The Bossa Nova was influenced [G] by the cool jazz movement,
[Gb] and Chad Baker was one of the great [Bb] stars.
João [G] Gilberto, amongst others, [Am] was [D] quite inspired [F] by Chad.
[G] And you can hear that on the way [C] of João [D] Gilberto singing
[G] that is understated, [Gb] and he sings over the bar line,
the way [G] Chad played [B] and sang.
[A] [Gm] And I felt the importance [Am] of including [Dm] some of the tunes
[G] to reflect that influence.
[Em] [Ebm] The song There Will Never [Ebm] Be Another You
was a fun [G] song to [Ebm] produce and to record.
[Fm] It goes back and forth between [Gbm] Brazilian [Fm] rhythm section and the [Ebm] jazz.
You can hear [Em] that [Ebm] we keep the same [Gbm] tempo,
but we [Fm] change grooves between [Gbm] every few [Fm] bars,
and it came out nice and was [F] fun to do.
And that features pretty [A] much everybody [G] who's on the record.
So you have Mark Johnson on bass,
you have [Dm] Steve Cardenas on electric guitar,
Oscar Castro Neves on acoustic guitar,
Marivaldo [G] dos Santos on percussion,
Rafael Barata on drums,
[Dm] Victor Lewis on drums,
and [C] Randy Brecker [Gm] on trumpet,
and [E] myself [Dm] on vocals and on piano.
I [Gm] may [A] kiss, [F] but they won't thrill me [Em] like [Bb] I used to [Dm] do
Yes, I [Bbm] may dream a million [Am] dreams, but how can [Em] they come true?
[Am] Yes, [Am] there will [Fm] never ever [D] be [G] [Gbm] another [Gm] [Gbm] you
[Fm] [Em] Another
[Fm] [Em] The [Eb]
[F] [Fm] [B] [Eb]
[Db] [G] [Eb] [B] production [Abm] that I [Bb] share with Mark Johnson and Steve [Gm] Rodley,
it's a great [Ab] team and my colleagues of many years,
and we have [Bm] [Eb] produced many albums together,
[Fm] so I was happy to be [F] reunited on this one [Cm] again.
[Bb] There's something interesting that [Gm] Mark [Bb] Johnson played [Dm] with Chet Baker,
[Bb] and so did Victor Lewis, [D] but at different times.
But Mark and Victor together were the rhythm section [Eb] with Stan Getz,
[Bb] who was another [D] star of [Gm] the cool jazz movement.
[Dm] So it's really a great [Eb] team of musicians.
[D] Chet had such a fluid [G] way to [F] play [Bb] through changes,
he was so [G] melodic, so [Eb] lyrical,
and it was really fun to put all this [G] material together.
[Fm] The word that [Cm] comes to my mind when I [Ebm] listen to your music [Gb] is lyricism.
[D] Can you agree to that?
[Dm] Can I what?
[A] Agree to that.
[Eb]
Definitely.
That's [G] the only thing that I know.
If [Eb] it doesn't have some lyrical meaning to it,
then I'm not [Dm] [Bb] interested in it.
I've [Cm] forgotten [Bb] you [D] just like [Bb] I should
[D] Of [Gm] [Bb]
course [Cm] I have
[G] [Bb] Except [F] perhaps in [B] spring
But [Bb] I should never [G] think of spring
For [F] that would surely break my heart in [Bb] two
