My [E] mom said I came out screaming.
[G] I've always been really, really loud.
I started really young playing violin,
and so I think that really [G#m] helped train my ear.
By [F#] the time my mom met my stepdad,
he brought in all of his record [F#m] collection,
and [Bm] was like, you're gonna play guitar.
And he would introduce me to [E] Otis Redding
and Aretha Franklin and [A#] Captain Antoneal.
_ And I [E] just kind of wanted to be like him,
and so I started playing music all [Em] the time.
♪ They always wanna come but they never wanna leave [G] ♪
My first show in New York, [Em] I was probably [B] 15 years old.
It was this like [G] little tiny [D] place in the West Village.
I had written a [A] song that day,
and I brought [C] like my little piece of paper,
[Bm] and I got up and sang the song that I'd written.
Everybody clapped, and people could only sing one song.
And they were like, sing another one.
And I was like, oh, this is fun, like wow.
And right after that, I started playing [F#] shows.
By the time I was like 16, I was like,
oh, I can get a fake [Em] ID on St.
Mark's.
[B] Can I play a show in this bar?
One time, one of my parents found out
that I'd been playing at this bar in [B] LA,
and they printed out my picture and wrote underage,
and took it to all the bars [Em] on the block.
For weeks, I got pictures of my friends
like next to that behind the bar, just like,
you're an idiot.
So that was pretty bad.

I've always sang and played music,
and I've really always known that [G] that's what I wanted to do.
I even [D] attempted college just [E] to appease
my mom's art [B] school, but I didn't really [G] go to school.
Me and all my friends would [D] just go play
out in [Am] the street for money.
We would [C] just play there from [G] morning until night.
I [D] would just make up songs for people [E] walking by,
and I would either scare them [B] or they would like it,
and they would give us [G] money,
and we would get [D] beer that night.

[Bm] My new single, X's and O's, was inspired by
my ex-boyfriends over the past [D] couple years.

I had been getting [Em] a couple text [Bm] messages and calls
saying that they missed me, [A] and I was like,
wouldn't that be funny [E] to just write about that?
So I did, and I don't think that they'll ever call me again.

[A] I'm really excited about this album.
We worked really hard on it,
[E] and my whole heart [G] and soul is in it,
so I hope [D] that people enjoy it.

[G] I love touring.
[D] Playing live is my [E] absolute favorite thing in the [B] world.
I'm kind of a [G] nomad.
I'm just like, oh, [D] I'm gonna go there right now,
and I just [Am] pack up.
I have always kind [C] of lived out of a suitcase,
even when I've had [G] my own place,
so I really [D] hope that I get to [E] tour this album
and [B] play for everybody all over.
Music [G] is kind of the only thing [D] I can do,
so [A] thank God I'm a musician.
