[E] I would say that for the most part my songs are autobiographical in the sense
that it has to come from a real experience, an emotional experience [A] or an
actual experience that I've gone through.
[E] I can still remember [A] every song [E] you played long ago when we were younger and [A] we rocked the night [E] away.
Once I had those songs I was really ready to go into the [A] studio and I felt
that [E] this time to get myself motivated I need to put myself in a new space with
[A] new people, a different producer [E] and I had done a little bit of work with Jay
Joyce.
[B] So I like the sound he got and I liked working [C#m] with him.
He was he
seemed really fast.
He didn't labor over things [A] but I really liked everything
that he had come up with [E] and we're both big baseball fans so I thought this could work.
She started playing me some of her new songs and it went on [F] for a while.
[E] I said hey I gotta do a record [B] you want to do it?
So I was [E] like well yeah.
[F#m]
[B] [E]
[A] [E] To me what I really love about her approach is that she's still a [C#m] kid about it you know
still excited and [B] that's pretty mind-boggling when [E] you think of how much she's done.
[B] [A] [E]
[C]
[F] [G]
[Am] See you tomorrow, [C] we rise [F] with sun, [G] fall [Am] with sparrows.
[C] When you're going to [F] sit down and write a song you have to [G] have a really powerful [Am] motivation.
[C] So you have to really want to [F] capture that [G] feeling which is [Cm] usually [Am] a bit
melancholy or sad or you're trying to build a fence around something that
helps you somehow [Dm] absorb it and therefore [G] you deal with it.
To tell [Am] some
kind of story that you [F] feel really needs to be told so that then you can tell it
to somebody [G] else.
[C] I didn't really have any idea about a particular sound.
[F] I felt that the
[G] majority of my work was done with the writing.
[Am] You know musically [C] direction wise [F] one thing cool about her is [G] she's open to
the process.
I [Am] mean I had a few ideas about [C] where to take things but what [F] the
result was was nothing [G] like what I thought it was going to [Em] be.
It [Am] kind of just took us
[C] where it was going and we just [F] kind of stayed out of the way.
[G] There were a lot of nice surprises.
First of all how quickly we did it.
[A] The fact that only Jay [G] the producer and
Giles the other musician, they both play everything [A] and me, we were the entire band and how full the sound is.
That [D] was just a real eye opener for me.
And the fact that some of the songs the way Giles and Jay were able to just light them up
you know and [G] give them a [E] life, a musical life and a rhythmic life that I [D] wasn't aware was inherent in there.
[A]
[D]
[G] [A]
I wanted to create a [D] unique sound you [Dm] know something that [C] doesn't sound [D] like any other record.
It's just been a real pleasant surprise for me on those levels.
I had every confidence that [G] the record was going to be [D] good.
