Hi guys, today I'm going to be showing you how to play a really cool bass line from a Erykah Badu track called Back In The Day.
It's featured on Dave Chappelle's Block Party.
It's one of the more common ones that you see on Breary Cool Tune.
So really what I wanted to do is show you how to play the line but also with an [A] effects side [F#] get that kind of organ sound that's on the track.
So I'm going to be running through a MegaFleek Bass Murph which is at the moment I'm just using it for a low pass filter.
[N] But you could EQ with your amp or any other sort of stuff you use just to get that kind of slightly more subby kind of tone.
And then the M9, it's a Line 6 M9 Modeler.
I'm using a parametric EQ and I'm using just a phaser and then third of all I'm using a patch called Voice Box.
And using these in conjunction with each other you get this kind of really cool [F] organ sort of vibe.
[G] [F]
[C#] [N] So the actual line when it comes to it, it's all based around sort of F minor kind of groove.
If I just go back to clean sound you're hitting the octave of [F] F and [D#] then the flat 7 which is the E flat.
[F]
[A] And then what you want to do for the second part of the passage, this is a little bit more complicated but you'll get ahead round it.
So you're hitting the [F#] F sharp [B] and then going up the [G] semitone to the G.
[D] Then you're going down to the [A#] D.
Then a B flat or A sharp whichever one you want.
And then G, [C#] C [C] sharp, C, [F]
[G] [E] like that.
So it's a little bit more complicated but it's all about getting that passage really smooth.
So if I play that really slowly a few times.
[F#]
[G] [C#] [C]
Yeah.
[D] [C#] [F]
[G] [C#]
[F] [Gm] [C#]
[A] And a lot of the time on the second time round you just want to [C#] hang on that C sharp.
It does change a little [N] bit throughout the track.
But if I just put these effects back into it you'll get this kind of cool organ vibe.
[D#] [C#]
[C] [F] [D] [C#]
Cool, alright.
[N] So like I said you don't have to use this pedal but I find it's really quite versatile.
It's actually a guitar pedal but because it's only dealing with the top ends and frequencies I don't use it for any sort of sub stuff at the moment.
It's actually really got quite good tracking even for bass as long as it's my higher registers it's generally like bang on.
I mean it might be a little bit muddier down the bottom but yeah it's really just using a bit of an EQ to [G] round off the tone.
Like a phaser kind of [B] sound or you could use a chorus.
Pretty similar.
And then just with voice box you could use an auto wah.
Like electro harmonics, bass balls, what was the other one?
DOD.
Do a really good sort of auto wah.
There's loads out there.
But just sort of combining [F#m] all those to give you this real sort of low down funky [F] nasty.
[G] [C#] [F] [N] So I'm just going to play through it with the track just to give you this sort of vibe.
And I'll [B] put the link in the comments as well so you can have a look at that just to go and play it yourself.
But it's a really cool tune I wanted to cover today because it's wicked bass line.
So I'll just stick this on.
[Gm]
[B] [D#] [D#]
[C#] [D#]
[Cm] [G#] [D#]
[G] [C]
[G] [C#] [D#]
[G] [Cm]
[A#] I'm [D#] going to play it.
[G] [C#] Wow.
[D#]
[F#] [D#] [Dm]
Tropical vibe.
Yeah so really that's kind of the bulk of [F#] it.
You're just hitting.
I'm just going to have a quick recap of those.
Just like the [F] F.
[D#]
That's sort of like minor 7 sort [F] of.
So you [F#] probably be quite familiar with that sort of pattern but.
And then it's just [N] taking a bit of time with that run. So going.
Let's do it in sort of tab form.
On the D string going [G] 4 5.
[G#] 5th fret on A.
[A#] 6 on [G] E.
3rd on [E] E string.
I just don't try and think of it as [F#] notes but.
[G] [C] [D#] Yeah that leads you back into the F minor.
[N] So yeah it's one of those lines that's like really kind of.
It's a very quick passage but you also want to play it kind of a little bit lazy a little bit behind the beat.
So yeah take a little bit of time with it.
And when you get the groove down you can just vibe this track.
Because it's about like 4 4 nearly 5 minutes.
And it's awesome for just developing your like behind the beat kind of groove.
So [G#m] yeah have fun really.
Like I say it's in the comments to the link to the video.
All the usual stuff.
I don't have any rights to it.
Blah blah blah blah blah.
[G#m] But yeah it's just a wicked track to [C#] jam about with.
And just really get your sort of like new soul.
Sort of vibe.
Practice [D] in.
Alright sweet.
