Well over the years there have been numerous women who have broken through those stereotypes and succeeded as rock singers
One of the first was Etta James for 27 years she has been on the road
She can tell you as much about hit records crooked promoters drugs and groupies as any male [Bb] singer
[Eb] You [F] know I've [Bb] always, [Fm] I've [Bb] always been a dreamer
[Cm] Spent my [Eb] life running around
[Fm] Etta [Eb] James said if there is one song that [Ab] sums up her [Bb] career and her life it would have to be take it to the limit
[Cm] Hey, see, [D] [Eb] came to settle down
It is also the way she sings all of her energy and [Bb] emotions go [Gm] into that expressive contralto voice night after night
[Eb] It doesn't matter if she is performing before [Gb] 50 people [Gm] in a small [Eb] club [Bb] or 50,000 [Cm] people at a [D] rock [Eb] concert
Take it [E]
[F] to the limit one [Bb] more time
[Eb] [Bb] Roll [F] with me baby Alright baby
Roll with me baby
Roll with me baby
[Gm] The beginning was easy discovered at [Fm] 15 her first record in 1954 roll with me Henry sold over a million copies
Although it [N] was banned from the radio until she changed [Fm] the title to [Db] wallflower
Just because I said roll [F] and it couldn't go on the [E] air but that made it even [Am] more mystique
Hey roll with me [Ab] Henry you know what do you mean roll
[N] Nowadays they roll I mean that's light weight right
Did you consider yourself a sex symbol
I [E] think I did
[N]
Why is the baby laughing
I don't know why they are laughing because they don't even know maybe they are laughing because I've been heavy most of the time
But see I still have considered myself you know even heavy kind of hot stuff you know what I [E] mean
[Am] I just [G] want a honey bee
[A] Etta has recorded 27 albums since roll with me Henry [D] had numerous [A] hits starred in rock and roll [E] shows the Jerry Lee Lewis [D] the Everly Brothers Fats Domino
Made money lost it and along the way she developed a drug habit [G] that had her hooked on [D] heroin for several years
[Am] [E] I had [Eb] pushed to the limits of [N] cashing checks insufficient fun checks that I didn't have
You know getting arrested for that kind of thing and the judge pointed it out you know one day says this lady is not a [E] criminal
He said you know this lady is sick she needs help
After detoxing from the drugs Etta found the help [A] she needed to [N] in her words get her head screwed back on straight
She also credits a belief in God with helping her stay clean despite the disappointments and hardships encountered while trying to rebuild a career
Even though the group occasionally works large auditoriums and opens for big names like the Rolling Stones
There are still a lot of one night stands and small clubs having to set up their own equipment and hassling with the same kinds of problems she faced 25 years ago
The Seattle trip just blew me I mean just blew me sideways this last time no advertising when we got to the town there was no nothing
And there we were in this big old place it was like what I would imagine if you would go to purgatory musicians hell
You know what I mean and I'm wondering oh my goodness how am I going to pay these guys and what am I going to say where is the promoter
You got to go run catch the guy and go to another bar well I'll give you 200 and here he owes you 15 that kind of thing so
Did anybody show up at that gig?
[A] No Wait
It's not always like that on the road [E] good things [Gb] are happening [Ab] in Etta's career [Gm] despite [A] not having a hit record since 1968 [Gbm] she works all the [A] time
And she considers her [D] past problems simply a learning [Em] experience
[Gb] I don't have [E] any more malice any more anger any bitterness nothing all [F] I want to do now is use my [Ab] talents and I calm down and it's wonderful and beautiful
Now I'm just beginning to [Gm] ready to want to sing
[N] Take it to the limit one more time
[Eb] [Dm] [Cm] [Bb]
