Hey guitar friends today, I've got an easy three chord country song to teach you how to play today
We're gonna learn how to play family tradition by Hank Williams jr.
My name is Robbie Trujillo
And I'm here to help you become a better guitar player and learn how to play your favorite country songs on guitar
So let's get another one learned today
_ _ [E] The three chords we need on this one are E, _ [A] A, _ and [B] B7
_ [E] Our intro is just going to be playing on the E chord
_ _ You can do down up down up down up for the strumming pattern and we can also
Do alternating bass notes so you can hit the sixth string just by itself as the first down strum
[E] _ Then go [Bb] up down up
And then you can hit the fifth string by itself [B] as a down strum [E] and then go up down
_ _ _ So you can alternate those bass notes and for the A chord you can alternate [A] between the fifth string and the sixth string _ _
_ _ _ [B] and
For the B7 same fifth and sixth strings, so we'll hit the fifth string
And then we're going to move our second finger to the second fret on the sixth string _
_ _ So you'll move your finger back and [E] forth as you alternate
If you don't want to do that alternating just do the simple down up down up down up strumming pattern
Here's how we play the first verse
Country
music singers
They've always [A] been a real close family
But [B] lately some of my kinfolks
Have disowned a few [E] others in me
_ I
Guess it's because I [A] kind of changed my
direction
Lord, I [B] guess I went and _
Family
[E] tradition
_ _ That is our verse and for the chorus
I'm [F] just gonna do the down up down up strumming here so you can see how [E] that goes
So here's how we play through the chorus
_ You
They get on me wanna know Hank why do
Hey, [A] why do you roll smoke?
[B] Why?
must you live
out the songs
That you [E] wrote
_ Over and over
[A] Everybody makes my
Predictions [B] so if I get stoned
Carrying on
Family
tradition
_ Here's the next verse.
I am very proud of
[A] my daddy's name _
Although his kind of music
_ Ain't [E] exactly the same
Stop and think it over
[A] Put yourself in my
Position [B] if I get stoned and sing all night long
Family
[E] tradition
Then we play through the chorus again
And then we have our instrumental break and that's just gonna be the progression from e a to [B] b
787 and we'll play through that progression [E] twice and then come in to the final verse.
So here's how we play the last verse
Lord, I have loved some ladies
[A] I had loved you
_ [B] They both tried to kill me
_ _ [E] 1973
when that doctor asked me
[A] Son, how'd you get in this condition?
[B] Said hey, so I'm just carrying on
Family
[E] tradition
Then we play [N] through the chorus one more time and finish up the song
Let's play through the full thing together now start with me here on the E chord
[E] _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _
country
singers
[A] Have always been a real close
Family
[B] They'd be some alike in folks
Have this on a few others [E] in me.
I
guess it's because
Kind [A] of changed my direction
[B] Lord, I guess I went and broke
Family [E] tradition
They get on me and want to know hey
Hank why _ _ _ [A] do you roll smoke?
[B] Why must you live out?
Songs [E] that you wrote
Over and over
[A] Everybody makes my
predictions
So [B] if I get stoned I'm just carrying on
_ Tradition _ _ I am very proud of [A] my daddy's name
[B] Although his kind of music I
Named [E] exactly the same
Stop and thank it over
[A] Put yourself in my
position
[B] If I get stoned and sing all night long
Family
tradition
Don't ask me Hank.
Why do drink?
Hey, [A] why do you roll smoke?
[B]
Why?
must you live
out songs
That [E] you wrote
If I'm down in a home
So all the [A] snakes trying to give me friction
[B] Said leave me alone.
I'm singing all night long
Family
[E] tradition _ _ _
_ _ _ [A] _ _ _ _ [B] _
_ _ _ _ _ [E] _ _
Lord, I have loved some lady
[A] I have loved you me
[B] They both tried to kill me
_ [E] I
when that
Doctor asked me
Son, how'd you get in this?
Condition I said [B] hey saw bones.
I'm just carrying on and old
family
[E] tradition
Don't ask me
Hank why do [A] you roll smoke?
[B] Why must you live out songs that you [E] wrote
Stop and thank you
Try to [A] put yourself in my unique position
If [B] I get stoned and sing all night long
_ [E] Tradition _ _ _ _
