Today we're going to learn how to play Farewell Party. _ _
_ We're using Lloyd Green's
version that was recorded by Bill Ferguson at Scotty's show in the 90s and
then posted on YouTube.
And you can find it on YouTube.
I'll post a link but you
can find it doing the search under Lloyd Green and Farewell Party. _ _
Lloyd's one of
my favorite players and always plays with such exceptional taste and tone.
_ His
E9 tuning uses the standard A, B and C pedals but his knee levers are in
different positions than most players.
He raises the fourth and eighth string with
the left knee lever going to the right.
He lowers the eighth string but not the
fourth with the right knee going right.
_ And he lowers the second string a whole
tone with the right knee lever going left. _ _ _ _ _ _
I tried to get close to what he
played but I don't think I got it all and certainly _ _ he plays with such _ _ _ _ _ grace
and [N] tremendous tone and I don't I could never play it like he does even if I
practiced a thousand years. _
_ _ _ _ Richard Burton [F] tabbed this _ [E] _ this performance out
and posted on the Steel Guitar Forum for those of you who read the forum.
And I
looked at Richard's tab and he did a very good job of getting it very close.
My tab is similar to Richard's but I changed a few things trying to get it
more like what I thought Lloyd did. _ _
_ So the way this is going to work is _ I'm
going to play Lloyd's version in sections and then we'll go over _ how to
play them. _ _ _ _ _
Okay let's _ listen to _ Lloyd play the first part and then we'll
analyze it. _
_ _ [D] _ _ [G] _ _ [D] _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ [G] _ _ _ _ _ _ _
[D] _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ [G] _ _ [D] _ _ _
_ _ _ [A] _ _ _ _ _
_ [D] _ Okay so we're in the key of D and that's pedals down at the fifth
fret. _ _ _
So it starts out at the first fret A and F fourth and fifth strings _ _ _ [Em] _
and
then slides to the third fret releasing the F lever _ _ [F#m] _ _ and strike the
strings again at the fifth and then _ let off the pedals and go up to the seventh
fret.
_ [A#] _
_ [F#m] _ _ [A] _ _ That's just going back to the fifth and letting off the A pedal [Dm] and
_ _ _ [F#m] _ _ _
putting the A pedal back down and let it ring. _
_ _ _ _ _ [D] _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ So we're sliding back one fret at
a time to the third fret and then letting off the pedals _ _ [G] _ _ _ _ _ [D] _
_ _ _ _ _ [G] _ _ _
and then they're
off at the third fret so we're in G there.
_ _ _ [Bm] And then the next [G] phrase starts
up here at the eighth fret with the E lowered on five and eight.
_ _ [D] _
_ [G] _ _ _ Go up to ten
and add the A pedal and let the E off _ _ _ _ _ and then [E] hit _ _ _ eight six and five [G] with the
pedals down releasing them one at a time.
_ [D] _ _ First [Em] the A then the B. _
_ _ _ _ _ [E] And then [F] at the
tenth [E] fret we're going to play the _ sixth and eighth strings [A#] together _ _ and
[D#m] _ _ six and seven with the [Em] B pedal _ and then [E] _ five and six.
[D] _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ [A] Then add the A pedal and we're going to pick up five and eight [G] _ _ _
and [A] then move back
to and hit the F lever _ _ _ _ strike them again so _ [G]
then _ _ it slides [G] down to the sixth fret.
_ _ _ [A] _ _ [G] _
_ _ [D] Then to the fifth where we release the _ F lever.
_ _ [A] _
_ _ [F#m] _ _ _ _ Now this next little [Gm] phrase you
have to listen closely to the how it goes but it's on the fifth string so
[Dm] _
_ [A] _ _ you're starting [F] pedals down and you're starting up at the sixth and slide back
to the fifth.
[B] _
_ [E] Let off the A pedal. _ _ _ _
Sixth string with the B pedal. _ _ _ _
_ [A] Then the eighth
string.
_ _ [D] _
_ _ _ _ _ [B] Then we're just pedals [F#] back down again and _ _ _ slide up [D#m] to the sixth.
[Cm] _ _ [C#] _
_ _ _ That's
_ five six and nine it's a seventh chord _ _ _ _
