Hey guys, today we're going to look at this lick.
I'm going to play it a little bit slower
for you.
[D] [C]
[C#] Okay, now this lick, [E] I listened to this when I was young.
The speed it's played
on the actual original, I thought, wow, it's a blistering lick.
And I always wanted to
learn it.
I learned it in the past different ways, not necessarily correct, but I actually
slowed the music down today and decided to learn it note for note [N] and then share it with
you guys just so that you know how it is on the track, note for note, just because I slowed
it down.
So it should be easy to work out when you slow things down.
And yeah, let's
get to it.
So slowly.
[D] [B]
[C] [N] Okay, so the first little bit here is a gradual bend up on the eighth
fret on the high [D] E, just after the beat.
Again, in the timings that Gary used to play
this, he used to play through timings and stuff like that.
So to work out this, you'll
really just have to listen to it and [E] feel free with it and not get caught up with being
[G] perfect in time.
You will be in time if you just kind of let yourself go with the phrasing.
So that gradual bend up on the eighth fret, full tone.
[N] Then we have this, okay, eight
seven [C] kind of staccato.
Then we have this phrase, [B] [N] which is hammer-ons and pull-offs.
Okay, so the seventh fret on a high E, hammer-on to the eighth, pull-off to the seventh, pull-off
to the fifth, hammer-on to the seventh and pull back off to the fifth.
So that's the
first part.
[D] [B] [N] And after that, we then go, okay, [C] [N] which is eighth fret on the B, fifth fret
on the high E, and then eight pulling off to fifth on the B, and then bending up on
the seventh fret at a full tone on the G.
That's the first bit.
Then we have this section
here, okay.
[C]
[N] Kind of just practice that.
And what this is, is we're playing the high E
on the fifth fret, then pulling off on the eighth to the fifth on the B, and then we
play the eighth fret on the G, slide to the seventh, and then pull off to the fifth.
[Fm] And
then play the [G#] seventh on the G, and then the fifth fret on the B.
[Fm] Now from there, it's
all downwards, okay.
We then go seven-five pull-off, [G#] pick the first notes on each [Fm] string,
and seven-five on the G, that is, and then a [C] seven-five pull-off on the D, [D] and then the
same on the A.
[C] And
[D] [C#] then at the end, we slide [D] to the third fret on the A.
[C] [C#m] And then give
it a nice big blues curl [Dm] on the end, okay.
[C] [C#m] [E] It's really important to get that nice sound,
[C] okay.
So [C#]
[E] very slowly [F#] all together, we have [D] this.
[B] [C]
[C#] And yeah, so that's basically the notes.
That's the best I can kind of give you here.
As I said, [G#m] main things to look out for is the first
big bend.
Really [E] kind of study where the timing is, where those two [G#m] little staccato notes come
in after.
And then after that, it's kind of free-flowing pretty fast, and you should hopefully
be able to get it from there.
You've got the notes now, so just try and experiment with how fast
you're playing it until it kind of sounds good.
And again, [G#] it's one of those feel sort of things
that you can't really notate in a tab or anything like that, but I'll do my best.
