Hey, you started out in medical school, didn't you?
Oh yeah.
Well now, what made you leave such a great profession as medicine to get into the rock
and roll business?
I think they call that the call of the wild. _
_ The wild call.
Oh man, well I've heard it too.
Tell us about the days at the Peppermint Lounge.
Well I was kind of like a later addition to Joey's band, but the [Gb] Peppermint Lounge is
an interesting place.
It was a landmark in New York City. _ _
It's all gone, it's not there [N] anymore.
But in those days, the atmosphere in clubs was a little different than it is now.
There were girls dancing in cages.
They were all over there dancing in a cage all over there.
_ Everybody wore a suit and tie.
We all [Eb] wore a suit and tie.
Everybody had to wear a suit and tie.
Yeah, I remember that.
Of course, you [Ab] know. _
_ I still got the tie.
And [Eb] _ we tried our best years later to kind of change that.
So we got these little knickers outfits.
I don't know if [Eb] you remember that.
And [Ab]
the club owner said, that's okay, get a [D] tie.
So it didn't work.
Well knickers, I never cared for knickers.
My mom used to make me wear knickers.
And I said, nah, I don't wear knickers.
But Peppermint Lounge was a phenomenon in its day.
And it did its thing.
And it's interesting because it's gone.
The streets gone now.
They're like apartments there or something.
Well, listen, I still remember fondly the Peppermint Lounge, the sounds.
And the B3 was kind of brought to the fore during [Ab] that period.
Now, how did you discover the B3?
It was a Hammond B3.
Which is a church instrument, as you all know. Yeah.
[G] _ Some friends of mine illegally took me to a club in a little town called Neurachel.
And I heard for the first time [Gb] an organ trio.
And I just said, what is that?
I was a classical musician prior to that.
And I heard an organist who was singing, playing bass.
And I said, that's what I want to do.
Well, you know, the Hammond B3 comes and now this has got it all built in.
I mean, I can hear it.
But it used to come with [Ab] a Leslie speaker.
And it's a big [N] speaker.
Gosh, it's almost as big as that piano.
And it's got a little horn in it that goes around and around.
It goes, wah, wah, wah.
And it spreads its sound all around the room.
It's like this.
I can show you if you like.
Get one second.
Yeah, show me.
This is what [D] it does.
It goes. _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ Only it [G] really goes around.
Stop, I'm getting dizzy.
[C] Really goes around.
Did I get dizzy with that?
I'm getting dizzy.
Is it true you work with Ringo?
Ringo Starr?
Oh, yeah, sure.
Oh, wow.
Yeah.
Wow. Yeah, Ringo.
He does a tour every year called the Ringo Starr All Star Band.
Yeah, I met him in London one time at his house.
And he was so nice.
Oh, he's a great guy.
You know, [N] he's happily married.
And he, you know, he just loves to play.
He looks kind of like Ringo.
Is he still married to Barbara Bachman?
He sure is.
All right.
Listen, would you sing us another song?
I'd be delighted.
Ladies and gentlemen, don't let him get out of that promise.
Felix Cavalieri.
How about Groovin'? Sounds good.
Groovin'. Woo.
_ _ _ _ _ _ [Eb] _ _
[Ab] _ You know, many people ask over the years, how'd you happen to write those songs?
_ _ [Ab] Well, every song has a story. _
[Eb] _ And some of them are [Ab] pretty important, like this one.
[Eb] You know, musicians, _ we work on Friday and Saturday night.
Now, I have never met a woman who really liked that idea.
_ They say, well, okay, [B] this is great.
[N] What are we supposed to do while you're out there having fun?
I said, you don't understand.
This is work.
This is not just out there Friday night, Saturday night having fun.
This is work.
Yeah, right.
So basically, I had to come up with an idea.
There's nothing better than to write a song so that people can understand that you love them.
Right?
Correct, ladies?
_ So that's what this song is all about.
