[N] everybody?
Ivan Moody here from Five Finger Death Punch and I am here at the Incarceration Festival
and you are watching Loudwire.
My first tattoo was on my stomach.
You can't see it because I look like Tom Selleck had a baby right now.
But no, this was my first tattoo and it's the element as well as my birth date.
And when I went in to get it, the lady actually asked me, I was 16, and she goes, are you
sure you want this on your stomach?
I'm like, yeah, do it.
And the second that needle hit me, I almost passed out.
So yeah, I've never worked on it or done anything around it because I love the memory.
The most recent tattoo I've got is my phoenix.
And this was a celebration, a personal thing, after a year of sobriety that I decided I
wanted to not only wake up every day and remind myself how far I've come, but how far I have to go.
This industry is not nice sometimes to certain people and I wanted to make sure that everybody
knew that I wasn't going anywhere.
So this was not only a symbol of my strength, but also hopefully a symbol that other people
can look at and have some kind of faith in it and know they're not alone.
It's a big deal to me.
But this is actually imperative to shedding skin.
It's my sign of, again, rolls into the phoenix.
When I came out, they had to put me in a coma.
My body had shut down.
I just wasn't there.
I died for almost two and a half minutes.
So I woke up three days later, three and a half days.
And I didn't recognize myself, let's put it that way.
I couldn't walk for two days.
They had to help me outside and they had to help me use the bathroom.
So I looked in the mirror and it was like Gollum.
I was green and ugly and pale and I said, what the f*** happened to me?
And that's when I decided I was going to shed skin and be the man that I should have always
been and I can be.
The biggest part for me, especially in sobriety, yes, it's the band.
Yes, it was for my kids.
Yes, it's for my family.
Yes, it's for everything in the world.
But at the beginning of the day, it starts with me.
And so this was the point of peeling that s*** away and starting fresh.
They don't hurt as much as people think.
They really don't.
I could hear it, but it really didn't cause me as much pain.
It's actually on my Instagram page.
You can see it as they're filling it in.
It was about a two hour sitting and he kept asking me if I wanted a break.
I was like, no, f***, finish it already.
So no, it actually, the head tattoos didn't hurt as much as, like my hands were the worst.
But when they hit my pinky finger on this one, I passed out.
I literally, he was like that.
I went, uh.
So that wasn't fun, but yeah, Boris Karloff, man.
A lot of people mistaking it for the monsters.
Understandable, but not so [Ab] much.
This is the Misfits.
See, I'm a little bit older and my first favorite band ever was the Misfits.
I latched onto them in number nine in 85, 86.
[G] I was about 11 years old.
I was like five years old.
But, but no, I fell into them right as Danzig left.
And so it was a big thing for me.
I had just gotten a hold of them and they separated and they got graves in.
But I've listened to them religiously ever since I was a kid.
And so this was my ode to the Misfits.
I actually [N] met Danzig.
I gotta tell you this.
I met Danzig and I get on his bus and one of the first questions he asked me,
he goes, who's the worst punk band ever?
Well, this is hairy.
Like what the do I say?
And it just came out of my mouth.
I was like, bad religion?
He was, good answer.
And we started talking at that point.
I was so afraid that I was gonna say something like a band and
he'd be like, get the fuck off my bus.
So I don't even know why I said bad religion cuz I think No Control is probably
one of my favorite albums of all time, so I don't know what I was thinking.
But hey, he was impressed.
Sorry, D.
They're more protective symbols than anything.
Like the one on my eye are the Spears of Destiny,
directly out of the Bible, the Christian Bible anyway, King James.
And then I turned my teardrop, it was once a teardrop,
I turned it into a flame to sit at the top of it.
Again, as a sign of the future.
I wanted to do just about everything I could to not forget who I am, but
move past it.
I mean, all these [G] tattoos, so I got all these tattoos in the country at the time.
[Cm] So as we went through these countries, [Bb] I did it.
And you can see, because they were like one day after the [N] other,
they started getting infected.
So I couldn't finish this one.
I've got two other countries here I've never done.
And Russia really shit on me with this one, man.
That was the most bogus tattoo I've ever had in my life.
This is out of a comic book.
This is actually one of the first things I ever had done was this entire sleeve.
Spawn, Todd McFarlane, is one of my all time favorite comics.
He used to do Spider-Man and whatnot until he left and started his own.
So this was actually out of, what is it, Spawn Renaissance.
And it was similar to Lady Death, who's another Marvel character.
And then I put, I just, I love the whole feeling of it, and
I'm a huge comic book geek.
My daughter?
Man.
Man.
She loves this.
She has actually started to learn Latin.
No shit, because of this.
She wanted to know exactly what it was, and I told her, I go,
I'm not gonna tell you, you have to look it up.
And so she looked it up, and up came, I'm serious, and
then up came Caesar and the whole blah, blah, blah.
So she has gotten a ring.
So every now and then on my Instagram page, I'll post something in Latin.
And she'll give me the words.
So it's kind of a cool experience for her and I both.
I'm like, well, I wanna title this to be such a way.
And she'll look up a couple words, she'll Google them.
And so yeah, this is her favorite, cuz it was educational.
Vinny Vidi Vici?
I came, I saw, I conquered.
All of these that I had tattooed on me are actual scars on my body.
This was from getting in a, you'll love this.
This was getting in a bar fight, and I picked the wrong kid to with, and
he pulled out a box cutter, and I didn't see it.
And he came at me like that, caught me right across my throat, and
I was like, what the fuck?
And as I put my hands up, he got me right back there.
So I put my arm up, and then he got me right fucking here.
You can't really see it with the hair.
So yeah, he ripped into me.
That was pretty crazy.
That's right as I joined Death Punch.
Actually, this is a true story.
I went into my first rehearsal with Five Finger, and
I had staples and fucking stitches in my body.
And I walked, you guys are gonna love this.
And I walked in and Zo goes, what the fuck?
I was like, you know, I just did it.
He goes, you can't be in this band if you continue to do shit like that.
So I stopped.
I was like, no more fights, I'm out.
And it's a true story.
My next tattoo, I've thought about it.
I wanna do something really special for my kids, not something normal.
I'm actually thinking about having my youngest daughter draw it and
do whatever she draws.
I hope to God she's a better artist than I am. So.
