Hi, I'm Espen Kraft.
A couple of my followers and viewers here on this channel has asked me to [Ab]
do this early
_ 80s synth-pop track called Feels Like Heaven by a group called Fiction Factory.
[C] _ _ _ _ _ So let's take a look at the connection [Am] and gear we're going to use for this
[F] 84 synth-pop [C] classic. _ _ _ _ _
_ _ [Am] Okay, so I'm [D] playing [C] the Roland Alpha Juno [F] 2.
[C] The sounds you're hearing [A] is really coming from the MKS [F]-20, the electric [D] piano with the [C] analog chorus
[G] for the [C] body of the sound.
And the sparkle is of the [Am] TX-802 [F] Yamaha FM synth
[C] for that [G] DX.
_ _ And the
[N] reverb setting is from the Lexicon PCM-81.
_ And for the drums, I use the sequential tom.
And that's been synced up to the DAW, so the DAW provides MIDI in for the sequential tom to
synchronize to.
I need that steady pulse from the DAW so I can sync up the bass later.
And the sequential tom outputs MIDI to the Roland TR-626 that provides hi-hat.
We'll take a look at that in a minute.
_ So I've routed the kick to the left of the tom and snare to the right of the tom.
And this is my little pattern going. _
I'll mix those kick and snares to the center of the drum sound later at the mixing stage.
_ _ But I have to do that to
have the individual outputs 1 and 2 having only a kick and snare.
And I put the tom up into
external sync.
So when it receives start from the DAW, it will be started as well.
_ Moving on to the TR-626 that has only one purpose and that is to provide the hi-hats.
So I've routed the individual out
of the TR-626 into the mixer as well.
And the hi-hat pattern is very simple.
It receives MIDI input from the tom.
And let's hear that hi-hat pattern.
_ _ _ _ _ _ Very _ simple but effective. _ _ _
So that's the drums taken care of and everything is routed into this Yamaha
_ 01V mixer, digital mixer.
I have the vocals live coming in on channel 2.
I have the tom, the kick left and the snare right going
into channel 3 and 4.
I have the hi-hat on channel 8 and I have the bass on channel 7.
I route the electric pianos directly into the analog inputs of the Audient sound card.
So I don't go through the Yamaha on that one.
And everything is piped
optically as an ADAT format signal into the Audient sound card [C] that can handle 8 ADAT inputs.
Everything you hear is done live in one take and only the synth riff and the bass is overdubbed in post. _ _ _ _

_ _ _ [C]
See _ _ _ _ _ _ _ how it plans for _ [Am] saddened eyes
[F] And tears to pave the [C] way I thought the fever as [Am] I knew _
_ [F] My hair will turn to [C] gray
Study your face and take [Am] break
_ [F] To close the comfort [C] now
We can recall the _ [Am] harmony _
_ [F] That lingered but turns [Dm] out feels [F] like heaven
