[F#] Hey guys, it's Carl Brown for Guitar Lessons 365.com.
Today we're going to learn how to play Fields of Gold by Sting.
So not a lot of guitar stuff, just a lot of keyboard stuff.
But we're going to do those chords on the guitar.
It's going to be pretty easy, [C#] a couple of barre chords.
Some people don't like [B] barre chords, but this one just needs them.
You can play it in standard [C#m] tuning.
Most part is pretty simple.
And we're also going to take a look at the solo.
So that's going to be fun.
So stay tuned for that.
So basically you have a couple of different chord progressions, except at the very beginning
of the song, [F] they hang on a Bm7 [A#] chord for a while before there's [Bm] any kind of
[E] activity going on.
And then the vocals come in and the chord progression starts.
So that Bm7 is one of those barre chords.
You're just going to barre [D] the second fret, and then you're going to have the third fret
on the B string, and then the [F#] fourth fret on the D string.
So just strum [Bm] five strings.
The [E] difference between that and just a regular Bm is just add the fourth fret [Bm] there on the
G string, and that's a Bm.
You're going to run into that one and this one too.
So just pick up the little finger.
So that's [E] kind of what's going on at the very beginning, the harmony for it at least.
Alright, so now when the vocals come in, we have what I just played at the [F#] beginning.
So that's going to start, we're going to keep that same barre chord [Bm] shape here.
What you're going to do is you're going to put your little finger [F#m] back down there on
the fourth fret on the G string, and you're going to lift up your second finger so you
[B] have full barre still, across five strings, fourth fret on the D and the G.
That's a Bsus2 chord.
So that's the first chord in this main [N] chord progression.
Then it goes [G] to a G major, hold that G, to a [D] D major.
[B] So it's overall going to have this.
[G]
Now [D]
the same three [E] chords but a little bit different timing.
[B] Start with that Bsus2, [G] then the [D] G to D.
So that G to D was a little bit quicker change.
And then we get to a [Bm] Bm chord.
So [A] [Bm]
[B] there's a Bm [Bm] that we did [A] earlier, to A.
You just play it like this if you want.
And then you're [E] back to that [Bm] Bm7 chord.
Hold that for a little bit.
[D#] Then this is when the [A] vocals kind of, after the first vocal line, [Bm] when there's [A]
[Bm] just instrumentation
here, the vocals just [G] stop.
Then the G [D] and the D.
So those [Bm] three chords, the Bm7, to [G] the G, [D] to the D, brings us back
around now for the second vocal [B] section.
[N] You don't really call it a verse, chorus, whatever.
It's kind of just [B] one part.
[E] Now it goes back through these same chords again except now it has a slightly different ending.
Let me play [B] this.
[G]
[D] [B]
[G] [D]
[B] [A] [D]
[G#m] Alright, so that was the exact [Bm] same all the way to, [A] instead [B] of coming back to [D] this Bm7
though, to that G and that D, [Bm] it just goes from [A] that Bm to A [D] straight to a D major.
[N] And then it goes back again.
So it plays those two parts with the two different endings.
So it plays the one with the Bm7 to G to D ending [G#] the first time.
And then the second time through those chords it plays [D#m] the one with just [G#] the D ending.
[E] And then it goes through those two parts [D#m] again.
[A#] Once again, they're just switching them out.
So now the third time you play it just like you did the first time, and the fourth time
you play it just like you did the second time.
Alright, so then we have this little bridge [G] section which sounds like this.
[D]
[G] [D]
[G] [D]
[Bm] [A] [D]
[Bm] [A] [D]
[E] Alright, so [G] that is just G to D [D] three times.
[G]
[D] [G] [D]
And then that [Bm] Bm [A] to A to [D] D.
And then do that [Bm] again.
[A] Bm, A to [D] D.
[E] Alright, so that leads us to the solo.
Now underneath the solo we're just [B] going to be [F#] playing, [B]
so we're going to be playing the
verse chord again.
[G]
[D] [E] The verse progression that we [F#] did earlier.
The one that ends with just the D [A] chord.
The one that basically ends with going [D] straight to that D instead of going Bm7, D to [A#] D.
Just [B] goes from that.
[A] [D]
[N] That's the one you're going to be using underneath this guitar solo.
So let me play the solo for you real quick and then we'll take a look at it.
Here we go.
[D]
[Bm] [A#]
[Bm] [D]
[A] [G] [F#]
[D] Alright, so it's just a solo that pretty much follows the vocal line.
So we're going to start here.
Now there's an octave of this too.
[B] [D] You [Am] can hear an octave line in there.
It could just be a [D] second guitarist [B] going.
[F#m] But just know that that's in [A#] there.
If you have another guitar player, maybe he can play an octave [Dm] beneath this.
[A]
Alright, but we're just going to learn this top melody so you can [D] just do it on your own.
So we have 10, [B] 9, 7 on the high E string [Dm] to 10 on the B twice.
[A] [D] And do that again.
[B] But the [A] second time through, the second time of hitting this [D] 10 on the B, you're going
to slide it up to the 12th fret.
So we have this.
[B]
Alright, now we're back to the 7th fret.
[A]
[B] [A] 7 on the high E, 10 on the [Bm] B and then this is [D#] on the G string [D] now.
7, [E]
[F#] 9, [Bm] slide to 11.
Alright, [A#] [D] then start that melody over again.
And do it again.
[B]
[F#m] Well, we have this ending phrase.
[G] [F#]
[D] [F#] That's just [D#] [E] 9, 11, [F#] 12 on the G.
[G] [C] Then [F#] 11 twice.
[A] Then [D] 9, 7.
[F#] So this.
[G] [F#] [D]
Alright, so we pretty much just [A#] keep repeating.
Now the ending of the song, we just [Bm] have this.
[A]
[D] [Bm] We're just [A] saying it feels a little.
[D] [Bm] That's just that the [A] same ending [D] that we had [Bm] in the bridge ending.
That B [A] minor to A to [D] D.
[Bm]
[A] [D] And it kind of does it like [Bm] three [A] times.
[E] And then after the third time, it starts [Fm] doing this, which you know, in [D] the actual instrumentation,
you can't really get that in the [C#m] bass notes in there too.
So we have to [D] raise it an octave.
This is the very end of the song.
So it's just a D chord.
[G] And then add the little finger to the 3rd fret on the high E to make it a Dsus4 chord.
[D] Then back.
[N] And that's Fields of Gold for you.
Hope you guys enjoyed it.
I'll see you again soon for GuitarLessons365.com.
