Start Jamming...
G'day guys and welcome back to another request.
This time it's for First Date by Blink 182.
Now the good thing is that a lot of the sections get recycled so once you have them down you can use them again and finish the song a lot faster.
The bad thing is that it's a little bit fast and some of the fills are a bit tricky to get up to tempo.
Anyway we'll break it down so that you guys can work it out.
So I'll top on the kit and get into it.
The song starts out with a fill and the fill goes like this.
[N] Then we're into the riff section and we're going to play that over on the ride cymbal and it goes like this.
Then we're into the verses.
Then we have the little stops on the toms.
After the stops on the toms we go straight into the fill from the intro.
The first time through there's a sneaky little bass drum right at the end just to make getting back onto the toms a tiny bit easier.
So that sounds like this.
The next section is I guess the post chorus and we go straight onto that up on the [F#] crash cymbals and it sounds like this.
[G] [G#]
[N] Going great so far because so many of those sections get recycled we're pretty much done.
After that we go back onto our ride cymbals so like the riff section I guess.
Then we've got verse and chorus again.
The only other section to look at is the bridge.
Now that's where we've got this hi-hat pattern playing this.
When it first comes in there's a snare drum and crash cymbal at the start.
[F#] Then after that first time through on the hi-hats we add the groove underneath.
It's like a half time thing with the kick drums playing 2 and and 4 and and the snare drum coming in on beat 3.
So I think you want to lead with your right hand on the hi-hats.
So always starting with the right hand up there and then it's just kind of coordination trying to get that kick drum to fit into place.
So for starters it sounds like this.
[G#] So if you can line up that open hi [N]-hat with the kick drums that's going to be a key to unlocking how that groove goes.
I'll play it a bit faster.
Right on and then after that we go back into our stops, back into our chorus and that's the song done.
So it's great because you get to recycle so many of those sections but it is a bit tricky getting it up to speed.
Try and stay as relaxed as you can and take it a bit slower if you need to without the music and then gradually work your way back up.
Anyway that's First Aid by Bling 102.
I hope you've had fun.
Happy practicing.
See you guys at the next lesson.
