The members of Fleetwood Mac open up about Lindsey [G] Buckingham's exit.
I'm [E] John Bowden from Rock History Music.
[D] My [Em] first reaction when Buckingham was fired was, at least he's not dead.
We've lost so many rockers, especially in the [G] last three years.
So far, Lindsey Buckingham has [D] not made a statement about his exit from the band, but
the group [A] certainly has.
[Em] They talked to Rolling Stone magazine.
First, Stevie Nicks said, we were supposed to go into rehearsal in June, and he wanted
to put it off [D] until November 2019.
That's a long time.
I just did 70 shows on a solo [A] tour.
As soon as I finish one thing, I dive back into another.
Why would we stop?
We don't want to stop [A] playing music.
We don't have anything [C] else to do.
This is what we do.
You [D] know you have pretty big shoes when it takes two members to [C] replace you.
Of course, Buckingham left in the 80s for the first time, being [B] replaced by Billy Burnett
[F#] and Rick Vito.
And then Vito left and Dave Mason came in.
And [A] now the replacements, [D] as we reported earlier, are former Tom Petty and the [E] Heartbreakers
guitarist Mike Campbell and [Bm] former Crowded House [D] and Split End singer [A]-songwriter Neil Finn.
[E] Christine McVie says the chemistry [G] between all of them immediately [D] was there.
[A] Now the band have just announced a [E] 52-day tour.
It's a big one, [G] kicks off in early [F#] October.
Go to FleetwoodMac [A].com for the tour dates.
We'll also [C] have them on our website, [A] RockHistoryMusic.com.
And it turns out the band does not like the word fired.
First thing I thought of was [Gm] conscious uncoupling from Gwyneth Paltrow.
I don't know why that just came to mind.
It kind of sounds [A] like they had no choice but to [D] let him go under the circumstances.
[F#m] Mick Fleetwood says,
Words [E] like fired are [Em] ugly references as far as I'm concerned.
Not [G] to hedge around, but we arrived at an impasse [A] of hitting a brick wall.
This was not a happy situation for us in terms of the logistics of a functioning [G] band.
[Em] To that purpose, we made a decision that we could not [G] go on with him.
Majority rules in terms of what we need [A] to do as a band and go forward.
When it comes to drama in Fleetwood Mac, there is a lot to unpack.
[C] Since 1967, they have seen Peter Green, [A] Jeremy Spencer, Danny Kirwan, Bob Welsh, just to
name a few, come and go.
So they have shaken that Etch-a-Sketch [D] a few times [A] for a reboot.
Mike Campbell [C] says he was at his home in Kauai when he got the call.
It [Bm] was his 68th birthday, and we share our birthday.
[A] His birthday is on February 1st, so this has been brewing for a little while, going way
back to Feb [D] 1st.
Interestingly, [E] he said he was just thinking [Bm] of what he was going to do with [D] the rest of
his life since Tom [G] Petty died last October.
[Em] As for Neil Finn, he [G] said he thought his arena rock days were [E] over, but he's always up
for a challenge.
Fleetwood Mac [G] plan to rehearse for two months, five days a week, and Stevie Nicks says they're
going to do stuff pre-1975 before she and Buckingham join the band.
Basically saying that Buckingham was not interested in doing [G] the old Fleetwood Mac stuff.
She [C] said, we were never able to do that since 1975 because certain people [G] in the band weren't
interested in doing that.
Now we're able to open up the set with [C] a lot.
A raucous version [G] of 1969's Rattlesnake Shake or something?
I'd like to do Station Man [A] from the 70's, which has always been [Em] one of my favorites.
[D] We're definitely doing 1970's Oh Well.
[Em] Stevie Nicks says there are about 10 Fleetwood Mac songs, [G] hits that they have to play, but
13 [D] of those songs in those shows will [F#] be older ones that are ready for the new lineup.
[A] Nicks adds, this is [E] sad for me, but I want the next 10 years of my life [G] to be really
fun and happy.
Adding, our [F#] relationship has always been [Bm] volatile.
We were never married, [A] but we might as well have been.
Some couples get [C] divorced after 40 years.
They break their kids' hearts [G] and destroy everyone [A] around them.
Because it's just hard.
This is sad for me.
I want to get up every day and dance around [E] my apartment and [A] smile and say, [G] thank [C] God
for this amazing life.
In 2015, [B] Buckingham told [G#] Dan Rather that it has been an [A] up and down relationship with Stevie Nicks.
Adding, you [D] would think after all these years, there would be [E] nothing left to work on.
But oddly enough, Stevie's [G] and my relationship is still a [F#] work in progress.
And I guess that says something, doesn't [Em] it?
About the care, [G] about possibly the parallel [D] motives that have [E] driven us down the roads
we've been on.
And I have nothing but [G] respect and love for [A] Stevie.
I hope she feels the same way about me as well.
A lot of [G#] you told us in the last video when we [Dm] were announcing the split with [A] Buckingham
that you would not see Fleetwood Mac [Cm] without Lindsey Buckingham.
Even though they're coming to my town, I'm [Em] not sure I'll go.
Because I have to be honest, Lindsey Buckingham was my favorite [G] part of Fleetwood Mac.
Having [B] said that, adding those old Fleetwood Mac pre-1975 songs is kind of exciting to me.
So, we'll see.
[Bm] Also, we've started a [Em] swag store.
It's small now, but it's growing by the day.
Where you can buy your own Rock History Music t-shirt, [Bm] sweatshirt, or mug, and much more to come.
We appreciate the [Em] support.
