Hey guys, hope you're doing well today.
In this video I'm going to be teaching you how to play the classic tune Foggy Mountain Breakdown.
This one obviously is absolutely essential for any banjo player to learn.
It's really not that difficult of a tune, especially the down the neck part.
As long as you know your rolls and your fretting techniques, you're more than ready to tackle this.
The up the neck part is a little bit harder, but it's honestly a good arrangement for whenever you're getting started with that.
So this lesson is going to be in two parts.
This is part one.
It'll be on the down the neck part, which is just_
_ And then the up the neck part will be in the next lesson, which is the_ _ _ _
_ [G] So it's just separated.
So this one will be down the neck, and the next one will be [D#] up the neck.
And if you want to get the tab for this arrangement and all my other lessons, you can find that on my Patreon page, which is patreon.com slash masonchrome.
So I'll go ahead and give a demonstration of what I'm going to be teaching you today.
I'm going to do it at a fairly normal speed, and then I will_
After I teach it, I'll slow it down, but this is just to give you the idea of what you're going to be learning. _

_ _ [E] _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ [G] _ _ _ _ _
Alright, so as you would probably guess, this tune is mostly based around the Foggy Mountain Roll.
If you don't know what that is, then you should go over to my beginner series.
I cover that and the fretting techniques that you'll need to use for this song.
So as long as you know that stuff, you're ready for it.
You'll start with the Foggy Mountain Roll, which [B] is just the_
_ [G] _ _ _
_ _ _ But over that roll, you'll do a second to third fret hammer-on on the second string, each time you hit the second [C#] string.
_ _ _ [G] _ _
And keep your finger down for this time. _ _ _ _
[C#] And do it again.
_ _ [G] _ This time, let your hand off.
_ _ _ And do it [A#m] again.
_ [C#] _ [Gm] _ _ Then on your way back, hit the third string with a third to second fret pull [A]-off on the first [Gm] string.
_ _ _ And then open third.
_ _ _ That's what we've [C#] got so far. _
_ _ _ [Gm] _ _ _ _ _
_ [C#] _ _ _ _ [G] _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ [C#] _ _ [Gm] _
_ _ _ _ [G] _ _ And then you'll do five, three, one, three, and then a one to two slide on the fourth [D#] string.
_ [Em] And fret your E minor chord, so you'll keep your middle finger there, or whichever finger you used for the slide.
And then also your ring finger on the second fret of the first string.
And do first, second, _ third, and then a forward reversal with a [D] zero to second fret hammer-on on the fourth string.
[Em] _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ And do a [G] standard G lick.
Three, one, five, [A] slide, _ _ and then [G] first, _ third, fourth on the second fret, _ first, _ _ _ and the same thing you just did.
_ _ _ _ _ [D#] _
_ _ [G] _ _ _ [Em] _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _
And do the [Cm] standard G lick [G] twice. _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ [Em] _
_ [D] _ _ _ _ _ [G] Then do that hammer-on, but this time you'll do it with a forward roll, so it'll be second, first, then fifth, second, first, like this. _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ [D#] And then do the foggy mountain roll with those hammer-ons.
_ [C#] _ _ [Gm] _
_ Third to second fret pull-off, [D] first, [G]
fifth, open, third, _ and then standard G lick.
[A] _ _ [G] _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ And that is it for this first part of the song.
I'll [C#] play it slowly and then a little bit quicker. _ _ _
_ _ [Gm] _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ [G] _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ [D#] _ _ _ [Em] _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ [G] _ _ _
_ [Gm] _ _ [Em] _ _ [G] _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ [G] _ _ _
[Em] _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ [Gm] _ _ _ [G] _ _ _
_ _ [Gm] _ _ _ [D] _ _ _
_ [Dm] _ [G] _ _ _ _ _ _
_ [Gm] _ _ _ [G] _ _ _ _
_ [A] _ _ [G] _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ Then at a more normal speed.
_ _ _ [Gm] _ _ _ _ [Em] _
_ _ [G] _ _ _ [D#] _ [Em] _ _
_ [G] _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ And of course, keep in mind, just play this at your own pace, learn it at your own pace,
because if you try to rush before you have every [A#] note right, or every technique down,
it's not going to sound right if you try to go too fast.
So just work on it and gradually increase your speed as you get more comfortable with it.
Alright, that's it for this video.
Thank you so much for watching.
Be on the lookout for lesson two.
That'll cover the up-the-neck part, which is an essential part of this song, so you'll want to know that.
I hope to see you there.
