Alright there my little John Cash friends.
[B] Today we're going to be learning Folsom Prison Blue by John Cash.
A really killer tune in an open key, so an okay po today.
And some really basic chords.
I'm looking at my chart right here that I've transcribed for this tune for one of my students.
And we're going to learn it today.
So we're going to start off by talking about the chords and then we'll talk about the strumming.
Okay, any [A] technique we go over today too, if you need some help with it, check out yourguitarsage.com.
And also if you want to get a hold of this chart, check out yourguitarsage.com as well.
Okay, so here we go.
Let's talk about the chords.
There are one, two, three, four basic chords in here.
And here they go.
Alright, so we got an E major, [E]
strumming them all.
An E7, so taking an E chord, lifting that ring finger.
We got an E7 there.
[F#] Then we got an A.
Thumb mutes that sixth string.
And the A is going to sound [A] like this.
And then we got a [B] B7.
It's going to look something like this.
Okay, so we'll talk about [C] the strumming here in just a second, but let's, I'm going to go into the chords [B] and how you're going to be thinking about it.
[N] So, and we'll talk about, well, I'll show you that beginning lick as well.
Let's talk about that and then we'll go and finish these chords up here.
[B] So the beginning of this lick is going to go,
[E] okay, [B] so on the fifth string, three notes, fifth string, second fret, hit it with your second finger.
And then you're going to hit on the first fret of the fourth string [D#] [B] twice, then back to the second finger, fifth string.
And on the sixth string, second fret, you're going to hit it, bend it up a half step, and then hit open E.
[F#] [E] [B] So slow, it's going to go.
[D#] [B]
[E] And [B] normal speed.
[E] Okay, now [C] if you're playing this to the CD [Bm] or to the original recording, [N] it's a little bit off pitch-wise, okay?
So probably they sped the tape up or slowed it down or whatever.
But either way, if you're playing to it, you'll be frustrated [B]
if it's not in tune.
Okay, so let's talk about the chords here.
So it's like, [E] uh,
2-3-4, 2-3-4, 2-3-4, 2-3-4, 2-3-4, 2-3 [Bm]-4, E7, [A] A,
[B] [E] E7,
[B]
[E] E.
And then you're going to play it in two measures.
Okay, so [B] if we're strumming, it's going to sound like this.
I'm going to do it slow first.
And the rhythm in 1-2-3-4.
[F#]
[B] If you haven't done this rhythm [F#] before, you want to make sure your hand goes like a grandfather clock.
It just keeps going.
You're not going [B] 1-2 -3-4.
You go 1-2-3-4 and
Okay, make sure you're [G#] doing that strictly like that.
[B] Otherwise you'll get into all sorts of mess on strumming.
If you need some help strumming, check out the strumming video that [F#] I've got on my [G#m] YouTube page here.
Okay, so, [B] um, here we go.
It's going to sound something like this.
I'm going to do it slow here first.
So that was two measures.
[E] One
[B] measure.
So we've got six measures of E, two of E7, four of A, four of E, four of E7, two of E.
So it's going to go like this.
[E]
[Bm]
[A]
[E]
B7.
[B]
E.
[E]
Okay, so there you go.
And to [B] speed, something like this.
[E]
[A]
[E] Going on B7 here.
[B]
[E]
[B] Okay, that's it.
Really simple.
And it just plays that same chord progression over and over again.
So it's just a verse.
There's no chorus.
Or we call that a chorus, I guess.
But basically we're just repeating that chord progression over and over again.
Alright, kids.
Go practice this.
