[Am] [A]
[Gb]
Hi, my name's Bernard Butler and [A] I'm just noodling around.
That's a piece that I've just been
You wouldn't believe that, this.
But I've just been doing that this morning and messing [Ab] around and sitting here.
Yamaha [A] have [Eb] brought this beautiful L-series guitar around.
[A] [G] And left it with me for a couple of weeks to see if I just want to play [Em] around with it.
Because it was the model that Bert Jansch played.
[Abm]
And in conjunction with the [Am] Bert Jansch Foundation, they came up with this idea called Around [F] the World in 80 Plays.
[Gb]
Where a musician takes the guitar, is inspired, sees what happens, records [G] one of these little videos.
[Bb]
And then [Gb] nominates somebody else and passes it on somewhere.
It could be anywhere around the world.
And we pass it round and round.
And literally, physically spreading Bert's [Ab] music and inspiration around the world.
[Am]
Bert was a friend of mine and I played with him.
I hung out with him.
[N] He was great.
He was warm, lovely, funny, cynical.
Maybe just funny.
I found him funny, quiet.
[A] He is a character.
I [Ab] love characters in music.
I love characters in music.
[A] I look for character when I hear sound.
When I hear his playing, [Ab] I hear character.
I hear [E] techniques that I don't hear anywhere else.
And I don't question whether [G] they're correct or incorrect or good or bad.
I think of personality [Bbm] and humanity [C] and heart and vision [E] and all those kind of things.
And that's what inspires me [G] most about [Ab] Bert.
His songwriting and his personality.
[E]
So I'd like to pass this guitar on to somebody else.
Who may not be an acoustic [F] guitar player or a folk guitar player like me.
Or anything else.
But another [E] musician who might learn something about Bert.
Take an [G] inspiration from it and come up [Ab] with something great.
That's what we want from music.
[Gb] That's what folk music is all about.
Taking inspiration and passing it on and passing it on.
Until it comes into all these different forms.
I think that's what Bert would really love [G] to happen now.
I've also [A] been asked to [E] write the seat note for this amazing record.
Just A Simple [Ab] Soul.
Which is a new compilation of Bert's music.
Which is out.
It's a great photo on the cover [E] actually.
I've written some notes and it's got all these hits [A] on it.
[Eb]
Depending on how you [A] regard what a hit is.
[E] But it's got all the things that I really loved anyway.
All the songs.
You should hear this.
If you don't know Bert's music.
This is a good starting place.
[F] If you don't even like acoustic guitars.
That's fine.
This is a good starting place.
And I am going to pass this guitar and this record on [Ab] to somebody else.
And I can't wait to hear what they do with it.
