[N] [E] [A]
[Cm] Hey everybody, I'm Frank Iero.
[C]
And I'm Evan.
And [Cm] these are the riffs that changed our life.
Let's see, the first riff I ever [Eb] learned, it's a [Bb] really really silly one.
Here's the [B] thing, when I [Eb] first started playing guitar I was 10 or 11 [Bb] and [D]
I didn't, I [Bb] don't know, [Cm] I never [Eb] watched this show, it was [Ab] called Peter Gunn, and it's super simple.
[Eb] And [Gb]
that's [F]
[Gb]
[A] all I learned, I [Db] was like, oh, I'm a guitar player.
Immediately, [Cm] I was like, that's it, now I gotta start a band, and I did, but I was told I couldn't play guitar, I had to play drums.
[D] Yeah, I think also too, for me, [A] another big one once [Bb] I was able [Ab] to actually make chord shapes was Say It [D] Ain't So.
Oh, nice one, yeah, that's a good one.
[G]
[Eb]
[Cm]
[G] Like that, just those two [Gm]
chords.
I love that too, but that alternate.
So [Ab] good.
[Eb] He's so [A] talented.
Yeah.
[C] I hate him [G] sometimes.
Yeah, so those are the [D] riffs that you started to learn, and you're like, oh man, [Ab] I need to join a band.
I need this more than anything.
[Eb] But [Bb] as far as riffs that [F] we've written, [Ab] things that I [G] think are really chill, really cool, very early on, [Am] writing, [Ab]
[F] I [G] was always like, [Ab]
I would follow vocal or write my [G] melodies around where Jared would be [Gm] singing.
And so a [G] lot of the stuff that I [Gb] would do were octave lines.
[Ab] And I remember being in the studio, [G] and we were recording Helena, [Gm] and going in and doing my [Gb] part, and just felt the chorus was just like [Eb] that.
[Bb]
[Eb]
[Bb]
And [Ab] then when it kicks into the [G] ending, to [Eb] change it up to go.
[F]
[Eb]
[Gb]
[Eb]
[G] [Eb]
I remember the engineer at the [G] time, his name was Mike Platnikoff, and him being like, [Eb] whoa, that's [C] a cool chorus.
And I was like, really?
Let's see, for the [G] new record, there's a [Ab] song on the new record called Madison Square Garden.
[Gb] And that's [A] one where, [G] it's one of my favorite songs I [Gm] think I've ever written.
[F] Yeah, that [Gb] song is amazing.
There's a riff in that, it's [G] the main riff where the [Gb] vocal comes in.
It's kind of all based around this E minor.
[Gm]
[Gb]
[Bb] [Gb]
[F]
[Db]
[Ebm]
And that [Bb] was one of those things where [Cm] I had it in my head [Ab] how this was all going to work together, and how the [Gb] vocal was going to follow that guitar [Ab] line.
But in [B] describing [Ab] how [Eb] the chord changes were [Gm] going to land, [Eb] it was [F] very, very difficult.
[Gb] And I'm very [F] happy that all the people that were in that room were very wonderful musicians and able to make that [D] song happen.
Oh, [C] here's one.
This is really simple, [Gb] and [G] I think super [F] effective.
It was [Ab] one of the first songs that I [Gb] wrote [F] for Stomachaches, and it's [Gb] the first song off the record.
It's [F] called All I Want Is Nothing, and it's really just based around, as [Eb] far as chord shapes go, this D chord shape where [Gb] you kind of
[E] [Gb]
[Db]
[Gb]
That's like the intro, [F]
re-intro [Eb] bits, and it's kind of like [Gb] the main [Db] hook, I think, [D] of the song.
Just [Ab] super simple, but it's so [F] melodic and so cool, it just kind of [Gb] moves it up [F] quickly.
I would [Cm] say at least two from [Bb] [Ab]
Parachutes.
I [Bb] love
of course I'm drawing [Db] a blank on the name of [C] our own song, [Eb] but
Oh, Merc's set, yeah.
That's a fun one.
I like [Ebm] the
[Eb] [Bb]
[Bbm] [Eb]
that's a real fun one to play.
[Ab]
Yeah, that one was very fun to play.
That one, yeah.
[Gm] I was trying to write a cramp [A] song, and [Bb] it got real nasty real quick.
That's [C] always the best part, when you're like, how can I make this dirty and sexy?
And [F] that's when I feel like [Cm] the best stuff comes out, because it [G] just gets nasty.
That's a good [Gm] one.
That's a real fun one to play.
[Ab] [C] Oh, well as far as that's concerned, No Fun [F] Club.
No Fun Club's a real fun [G] one to play.
And it's [C] pretty simple as far as [Ab] riffs go.
[B]
[Abm] So you're just kind of [Ab] doing that, and you're just going
[B]
[Ab] [B] [Ab]
[B]
[Ab] [Abm]
So actually, here, listen to what he's playing [A] underneath that.
Yeah, it's kind of [Bm] like this
That's where the cramps thing comes in.
[Gbm] It's a cramp stomp, basically.
So it's [Ab]
like,
[Abm]
how do you make a [G]
swampy, [Gb] [G] dirty punk rock song?
And [E] that's the way you do it.
[Bb]
[D] If you were to put 1970s L.E.S. [Gb] in a song like that
Thank you so much for watching.
I've been Frank Iauro.
[Gbm] And I'm Evan.
And these were the riffs that changed our lives.
