Hi, Travis here from Wampler Pedals and the Chasing Tone Podcast.
A question we get quite often is, do I need a boost [N] pedal or do I need an overdrive set
clean as a boost pedal?
And it's all personal preference, but I kind of wanted to show you some of the tonal differences
running into a clean tone and then into a dirty tone.
So, the main difference between, or what I'm using now is I'm using our Decibel, which
is a full range, full frequency boost.
In other words, it's boosting your bass, mids, and treble.
And then I'm also using a Clarksdale Delta Overdrive, which is a Tube Screamer style
pedal, which is a very common pedal that people like to run the gain low and the volume high
to get more of a boost.
So, the easy answer there is one's boosting every frequency across the board, and then
the Clarksdale or, you know, any other pedal that's designed to do something, this one
is boosting kind of a specific frequency more than others.
In this case, it's the mid-range.
So what I'm going to do is I'm going to play some clean stuff, and then I'll click on the
Decibel, and you'll hear that it's a full range.
And then I'll stop, and then I'll play more clean, and then I'll click [A] on the Clarksdale.
So here's just your clean tone.
[D] [E] [D] [A]
[G] [D] [A]
[N] [A] [D]
[E] [D] [A] [G] [D]
[A]
So once again, off,
[D] [A] and then on.
[D] [A]
So [D] [A]
[D] [A]
you can hear every frequency across the board is being boosted.
And you're also going to notice that sometimes it can get a little woofy or bassy because
your bass is also being boosted.
And especially when running into gain pedals, and I'll go into that here in a minute, but
that can also make some of them kind of sound a little fuzzy, which is pretty cool.
So now let's do the Clarksdale, which is going to boost the mid-range a little bit.
So first clean, then I'll turn the Clarksdale on.
And the gain, it's going to get a little gainier because it's going to clip a little.
So [D] [A]
[D] [A]
[Bb] [A] [D]
[E] [D] [A]
[Gb] [A] [F] [A]
[D] [A]
[D] [A]
[Gm] [Dm] [C]
[Gm]
you can hear it's boosting the volume, but there's also a frequency in there that's
getting boosted as well, and there's also some gain that's introduced.
What I really like that for is running into a gain channel or another dirt pedal, it really
tightens things up.
So it's going to have kind of the reverse effect of, say, like a full-range boost because
that can make it sag or get fuzzy.
So I'll just go through that.
So here I'm going to kick on our Pinnacle, and that'll give us some dirt.
[A]
[G]
[A]
So now the full frequency boost, and you'll notice that some of the bass is going to get
boosted as well.
[C] [A]
[B] [C] [A] So
[Gb] [E] [B] [Bb]
[Db] [B] [Bb]
[Eb] it changes the tone a little, but more than anything, it just changes frequencies,
it changes volume to where if I kick on the Clarksdale, it's going to really tighten things
up and add a little bit of gain, and also boost.
So here's the Pinnacle, [A]
and now the Clarksdale with the Pinnacle.
[G] So [C] [A]
[C] [A]
[Bb] [Ab] you can hear that tightens it up, it adds some compression actually because it's gain
going into more gain.
So it's adding compression, it's tightening things up, and it's also changing the tone
a little bit more.
So that's why you would want to use different pedals as a boost other than just a clean
boost or a full frequency boost to either change your gain or your clean tone.
So hopefully this helped a little bit, helped answer that question.
If you have any more questions, feel free to shoot us an email, help at Wampapedals.com,
