This is Erin Hofstra with the Brambeck School of Music and in this video we're going to talk about
easy rock melodies with the open E minor pentatonic scale.
So the open E minor
pentatonic scale is the first scale that I show my my budding rock students
because it's so easy it's in the open position so [E] you have 3 [B] 2 [A] 2 [G] 2 3 3 [B] [E] [F#] it's a pentatonic scale because it has five tones E G [B] A B D [Dm] and they just keep repeating in octaves. [Cm] So this scale works great over most styles of music but particularly in rock and blues as you will see in the following examples. [Em] And the E minor pentatonic scale works well over [G] E minor chord, E [E] major chord, [A] [G] [E] or E dominant 7th chord. [B] So learning a scale isn't musical it's just foundational so the goal here is to start to learn how to create melodies and riffs with that scale and make music. So I've picked out these easy ones to start with these easy melodies. First one is Suzy Q by Credence Clearwater Revival. [E] [G]
[A] [B]
[E] [G] Next one is Break on Through by The Doors. [D] [A] [E]
[Bm] [D]
[C#m] [D]
[Em]
[B] [E]
Next one is Are You Gonna Go My Way by [G] Lenny Kravitz. [G] [E] [Bm]
[E] [B] [G]
[E] [Em] Next one is Howlin' For You by The Black Keys. [Em] [Bm] [E]
[D] Next one is Rumble by Link Wray. [E] [A] [E]
[B] [A]
[E] [D]
[B]
[E] [F] Back in Black by ACDC. [A] [A] [E] [D] [A]
[B] [D] [A]
[Em] [G] [D] [A]
[E] Then Little Sister by Elvis. [B] And then the last one is [G] [A] [E]
[G] [B] [C] The Light of the World by The Beatles. [B] [G]
Hopefully [F] these examples will inspire you to create your own melodies and help you start learning how to make music out of these scales.
