Funk 49 Guitar Lesson Joe Walsh James Gang (Easy) chords
Start Jamming...
Ok, so today I'm going to do a lesson on the song Funk 49 that was made famous by Joe Walsh
and the James Gang.
Played a hundred different ways.
I just want to show [C] a few riffs on this song so you can make it your own [B] and hopefully
learn something from it.
I've been playing this song for years and I've seen it [E] slaughtered on YouTube.
So, the guitar is in standard tuning and the song is in the key of [A] A.
[Am] [E]
[Gbm]
And it [A] starts out on this [B] D note [Bb] on the third string, seventh fret.
He bends it up a whole step.
[E]
Add the pinky on the eighth [Gm] fret of the B string.
[B] Let off on this.
[D]
[Bb] [Em] [Db]
[C] He bends [Bb] that down about a half step.
[G] [G]
Goes up a whole step with [Am] the G string.
[D] [A]
So it's two [A] pull-offs.
[G]
So you can [C] hang in that, it's easy.
And then it goes [A] right into the
And that's nothing more than a mute.
[Bb]
The low E.
And the first four strings of the guitar.
Let the A ring, we're in A.
[Em]
[D] [Gb] That's the opening.
[Bm]
[E] Generous muting going on here.
And here's this chord.
[D]
And that's the chord that [B] everybody knows, [F] I hope.
[G] [Bb] [Eb]
[A] That chord in every five-year being, you're going to use it all the time.
So [E] it's
[D] [E]
Vibrato here after [D] the chord.
[E] This is short from playing [B] all day, but
Add [Gb] the vibrato and then it goes into this riff.
[A] [A] [Em]
And again.
[G] [A]
He [Am] does the power chord, the, [B] let's call it A note third.
[A] Every other time [B] and then hangs on the note every other time.
Does that four times, goes up two [Bm] frets.
Does that again.
And very quickly goes to Jimmy's chord.
[D] E seventh with the raised [B] ninth, I call it.
E seventh augmented [Bb] ninth, E seventh sharp nine.
[D] That is the chord.
All kinds of nonsense played in that.
Take [E] it from me, it's the E seventh with the raised ninth.
I watched him play it ten feet away.
That's what he's [E] playing.
[D] Goes like this.
[E] [D]
It's all through that.
And then you get to the part [B] with the drum solo.
And the [B] other day I was playing along with the James Gang recording.
And got to the drum solo and I [Gb] got bored and I had nothing to do.
So I started going like this.
[Eb]
[C]
[F] [A]
[E] And I started playing the drum solo.
So [B] if you want to do a [C] solo piece, you can.
Backwards, upstroke, to the fourth string.
Kind of like a rig, but you hear the notes and hangs on this note.
[A]
[G] Sometimes he plays that note twice.
[D] [Gb]
And [C] that's the riff.
[Am]
And then he plays this.
Hang on that G note.
Then up to [Cm] the tenth fret, the highest string, [Bb] the E first.
[A] Then bend it up first and come down.
Or sometimes he plays it like this.
[D] [Gb]
[E] Watch the whole song.
Sometimes he will hang like this.
[A]
[D] [A] [C]
[A]
[E] [Gbm] Sometimes he [A] just hangs there.
[B] [E]
[D] [D] [E]
And that's pretty much the whole song.
And [C] if you listen to the album, you know those riffs.
You're home free.
Practice.
I [Bb] can't play it.
Maybe you can.
That's all I can tell you is Chet would say.
