In this lesson, we're going to take a look at the James Gang track, Funk 49,
which of course features Joe Walsh on the guitar.
The intro riff is from the A minor pentatonic scale and goes like this.
[A]
[E] [Eb] [D]
[E] So let's break that down.
I'm going to start off with a whole step bend from the seventh fret of the G string.
Once I reach the top of that bend, I'll simply stop the note
[C] with the side of my right hand.
Now I'll grab the eighth fret of the B string,
and I'll use the middle finger on my picking [G] hand to get that note.
So I kind of plucked [Eb] that.
[G] Now also with the middle finger, I'll do a pre-bend of a whole step
from the seventh fret of the G string, and then release that bend,
pulling off to the fifth fret.
[C] Now once I've reached the fifth fret here,
I'm going to bend back upwards roughly a whole step.
[B]
So we just bend up before moving on to the next section.
So here's what we've done so [D] far.
[C] [F] The rest of the intro sounds like this.
[D] [G] So what I'm going to do is I'm going to bend up a whole step
from the seventh fret of the G string, and then I'm
going to strike that string, but I'm going to mute it.
So it's going to sound like this.
And what I do here is I have my middle finger on the G string,
and then the pick in front of the middle finger,
and I strike that string one time.
[E] Then with the middle finger, I strike so that I hear the note.
When we put those two ideas together, it sounds like this.
And we'll do that three times, each time releasing a little bit more.
[Eb] Finally, the fourth time, I'll simply play on the seventh fret of the G string.
So we'll mute, [D] and then strike the seventh fret of the G.
So here's what [Em] we've just done.
[D] [N]
