Funky Memphis Guitar Rhythm Chords and Improvising Lesson in the Key of C chords
Start Jamming...
Today I'm going to be playing some funky guitar in the style of Memphis and Muscle Shoals.
A lot of great guitar players,
session players who
recorded many classic records in studios in those two cities, Memphis, Tennessee, Muscle Shoals, Alabama.
And I
pre-recorded a rhythm track
that I'm going to play along with in a minute and play some licks on there that
you can study and
figure out what I'm doing there.
But the chords that I'm going to be using, we're going to be playing in the key of C, and
the chords that I'm going to be using are a C7,
an [F] F7,
and a [G] G7.
[C]
[B]
[C] So [B] I'm taking that chord and I'm lowering it a half step,
[C] [E]
[C] sliding into it, hitting the lower note [B] coming from this B up to the C.
[C]
Same thing when I go to the F7, lower it to the E7 and [E] slide it up a half step.
[F]
[F]
[C]
When it goes to the V chord, [Ab] I'm going to this
it's going to be a F sharp 7 and I'm sliding it up to the G.
[G] [Em]
[C]
[Ab] [B] [C]
[Ab] [F]
[Eb] [C]

[Em] [F]
[C] [Cm]

[E] [C] Okay, the [A] notes I'm playing there are basically
[E]
[C] [F] [Cm]
[C] [Am]
[E]
[G] [C]
Okay, some of the notes that I'm playing on there,
there's our C7, or
[Em] a
lot of it is the the blues scale and I like to mix in some major notes in there with it.
So basically the notes I'm using are these.
[A] [G]
[E] [Ebm] [Bbm]
[Fm] [C]
[Cm] One more time.
[Dm]
