Hey everybody, I hope you're doing well today
I've got two Merlins
I wanted to go ahead and compare them for you do a quick video and show you the differences in
Sound and things of that nature
This is my mahogany
G model M4 Merlin and this is a spruce
D
M4 Merlin so the differences here are
Obviously the wood
they're exactly the same size and all that but the differences are the
The main differences are the size of the strings
the G model strings are thicker strings and
Three out of the four strings that are on
this G model are wound strings and
The phosphor bronze wound and one steel string [G] and
The opposite of that is true for the D model the big bass string is the only
Phosphor bronze wound string the rest of the steel strings now
[N] We tune the G model
to G D G the D model we tune to D a D and
That is your standard dulcimer tuning the D a D tuning so let's let's do a quick little sound comparison
for both and
So you can hear them this D is going to be a lot brighter the spruce will [D] be brighter, too
[N] So this is the spruce [D] D a D strong
[E]
[A] [D] Okay, [G]
[D]
[E] [D] [A] [D]
[G] [D]
[N] that's just a quick little
Run through on the spruce let's check out the mahogany
Mahogany G model and [G]
with all this rain and different
drastic changes in weather we've been having here
[D] All my instruments [G] are having a tough time staying tuned.
They're all too sharp
[D]
[G]
So here's the G model mahogany
[Dm] [G]
[C] [G]
[Bm]
[G]
[Cm] [Bm] [Cm] [G]
Okay
[D] [G]
another difference as I'm sure you can tell
this G model
Has the numbers on the frets
And I'm told you can order it without those numbers on there as well
But going back to this spruce D
It's a lot brighter
[D] [N] now I
Just wanted to do that quick video showing you some of the differences in these two models now.
I will say this
If you get the G model
You can automatically without capoing play with
Instruments like you know guitars and banjos if a guitarist is tuned standard and a
Banjo is in standard G tuning and they're not using the capo you can play with them
You can play the chords that they're playing here now with this being in the key of D
You'd have to capo and you'd miss half of your frets here if you did that
Or you'd have to transpose
Your chords and play you know the right key chords for whatever they're playing with [B] it's not impossible to play with them
It's just easier to play with them with the G model
[D] But remember anytime you know if you get the D model
It's gonna be a much higher voice
[Ab] They're both I love them [N] both there's there a lot of fun to play with and
Boy they are just a blast to play they're real they're so thin and that they put off such
Volume it's unreal to me how much volume they can put out
I'll have both of these models link below on Amazon.
They're 129 bucks
Which you just can't beat for a new instrument, especially one.
That's just fun to play
Another thing to note is that any dulcimer tab you find now I'm creating some Merlin tabs
But any dulcimer tab you find?
You can adapt it you can use it with these
You'll just have to mentally in your head flip the tab over
Because they're the tab will be upside down for you if you're looking at dulcimer tab, but
But yeah, these things are blast they're easy to train
Travel with they're so tiny you just throw them anywhere.
They weigh nothing
And they're [D] just fun to play I was doing some claw hammer with this one
Anyway,
[Abm] I hope you enjoyed that [Ab] quick little comparison video.
I hope you run out and get you a Merlin right away cuz they're a blast
Before I go I just always want you to remember Jesus loves you.
Bye.
