[Bm]
[N] I think it's, I don't know whether it's complicated or not, [B] but I
[A] mean you [F] see all of these musicians.
Well, I'll tell [E] you what happened before.
I, I, I,
[Gb]
[D] [F] [G] I was, I was,
[B] [Eb] we were snorting and we would just do that on the [B] weekends.
And, because [Bb] everyone, it was [Eb] prevalent, it was everywhere.
People, you'd go somewhere and they'd [E] say, you [D] want to hit, you [N] know, and you'd do it.
You'd get, you know, everyone would become avid.
If, if you liked it, some people just didn't like it, and that was good.
I wish I hadn't liked it, you know.
Art Blakey, that's the
I was really around it with him because he was very loose about it.
He would do it in front of anybody, you know.
[F]
He would, [B] he would [Gm] ask [Abm] me to help him do it.
[Eb] You know, I wasn't doing it, but he was, you [E] know.
Now, he knew I wasn't doing it, you know, but he would ask me to help him.
So, now it got to be like, oh, well this doesn't, you know, this looks, he's doing it, it looks easy, you know.
It looks like there's not the problems that people say, but of course there [Eb] were the problems.
And, [B] it was just, [Db]
[G] [E] [Gb] [G] I mean, I, I would not [E] probably have got to know many of the great musicians
if I hadn't been doing that, which there's no reason to do [Eb] that.
[E]
[Eb] [G] [E] The class of the [Eb] greats who were doing that, [Bm]
[Eb] you know, [N] it was more like a community.
And so, you see the guys that weren't doing it, you, you know, you couldn't, you wouldn't hang with the guys that were doing it.
And the guys that were doing it,
[Eb] [E]
I think, the greatest, [Db] you know, [D] people [Eb] like Joe.
[D] [Db]
[Eb] I mean, I could go on and on, you [E] know.
So, I, it became like it was a part of the community.
So, they, [Gm] if they knew [E] you were doing it, [F] then you were like part of it.
It was almost like a gang or something.
[Eb]
[Bb] [E] The community itself, you know.
If you are a drug addict, every morning, you need to go, [D] if you [Dbm] don't have [Dm] anything to [Dbm] [Bb] do, you wake up, [Dbm] you know, you got to have, you wake up just to get started, you know.
So, if you don't have that, you got to go out in the street and find it.
And so, you hear people in [E] the street saying, where is it at?
You know, who's got it?
[Dbm] And [Eb] somebody will say, well, you know, around the corner, they had some stuff, you know, [E] five people OD'd last night, you know.
And the first thing you want to say, show me where [Eb] that was [N] at.
You know, because you know that's some good stuff.
Because you don't, you think you're [Eb] invincible.
You don't think it's going to [B] happen to you.
You don't think it's going to happen.
[Eb]
You kick many times, you know.
I mean, very, no one can stay and just do it.
If you do, you know, you won't last.
I've heard kick many times, you [F] know.
[Eb] I [E] remember Philly Joe Jones, because you learn all these lessons with, and Joe would [Eb] say, well, he would get to the point where he would have like, you know, you start out maybe $20 a day, you know, and the next day [E] you're up to $15, and the next month you're up [Eb] to $100, and the next time [E] you're $200 a day.
[F] So, you know, [Eb] what Joe would do, he would always stop.
[E] You know, he would detox.
[Bb] [N] When he started back again, he was back to $10 a day, $20 a day, you know.
So I'm learning all these lessons, you know.
Not very good lessons, but I'm learning these lessons.
So, you know, it's just the community.
And
[Bm] I will say, there's [Eb] nothing positive that comes out of it.
The only thing that's positive that [Db] might come out of it, it slows [Eb] everything [B] down.
[E]
So when you're [B]
[Eb] performing, especially [Db] [B] musically, you [N]
see everything, you know, you hear everything.
And so it's like you have enough time to make decisions.
[F] You know what you're playing.
And so [Gb] when you, and if you're fortunate [N] to stop, you still retain that.
You [Eb] [Db] see [E] everything, you hear everything.
Now you can do it without the, you know, without the drugs.
[Eb] That's about the only thing I can ever say positive about it, and I [E] wouldn't encourage anybody ever to do it, because you can meditate, [Eb] you can
