_ _ _ [Am] [N] Hey, _ this is John at LearningGuitarNow.com and this podcast I want to show you a lick
in the style of Gary Clark Jr.
And this kind of sounds like something he would play over the tune Bright Lights, Big
City I believe is the name of the tune.
So this little lick is in the key of A.
It's basically a rock groove.
The first thing I'm doing is doing a unison bend, which I find that he likes to do a lot.
In this case we're in the key of A.
We're putting our first finger on the B string,
the 10th fret.
We're putting our third finger on the 12th fret of the G string and bending that 12th
[Dm] fret up to the A pitch, giving you unison As. _ _
[A] _ _ Then you're going to vibrato those two notes.
_ I'm also playing this lick with my fingers, so I'm striking it with my thumb and my first finger. _ _ _
_ _ The next step [F] is to hit the 10th fret while you have the 12th fret bent up still.
_ [Am] _ And _ _ [Ab] _ _ then hit the 12th fret of the G string [A] with your thumb.
_ Pull down.
_ _ _ _ _ _ And then you're going to hit 10th fret again and then strike the 10th and 12th frets and
bend up three times. _
_ _ _ The first part sounds like this.
_ _ _ _ _ [F] _
_ _ [A] And _ then you do a roll back.
That's what [E] I like to call it.
Slide roll.
There's all kinds of different names for it.
It's kind of like rolling down on the 12th fret _ with my thumb.
_ And then right on the first beat of the next bar, you're going to hit the [A] open A _ _ string.
_ [Ab] Bend 13th fret of the B string.
_ _ Now bend it up again slightly.
_ [D] _ Then [E] 10, 12, 10 on the B, G and B [A] strings. _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ [E] _ _ _ _
_ _ [F] Bend 8th fret on the B string [G] up gradually.
_ [Ab] _ Right [E] after the beat comes in, you got one strike.
[A] One.
[Db] _ [Ab] _
5 [A]-5 on the E-B.
_ _ [E] _
8th fret on the B [G] string. _ _ _ _
[Am] _ [Eb] _ _ [E] And I'm doing a pre [N]-bend and I'm striking a lot of different ways, but _ use your first
finger or your thumb.
Depends on what you like.
[F] _
_ _ Pull down, pull off the 5, strike the [Dm] 7 on the D string, the A note. _ _ _
_ [Am] First section is this. _ _ _
[D] _ _ [A] _ _ [B] _ _ _ [A] _
_ [D] _ _ _ [A] _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ Now the D chord comes in next.
We're hitting 5-7 on the [C] G string.
[D] _ _
_ _ 5 on the [E] B string. _ _
5-7 [C] on the G [D] string.
_ [Eb] _ So you have this.
[C] Right when the D chord comes in.
_ _ [D] _
_ _ _ Next [Eb] step, 5-2-7, G, D string.
[Am] _ _ _ 7-5 [D]-7-7.
[A] _ _ _ And then I hit 5-5 and bend it slightly with [Db] my thumb. _ _ _ _ _
[Am] 7 _ -5-7-5-7.
[D] _ [A] _ [E] _ And then I'm doing [Am] like a pre-bend and a rake in with the thumb.
[E] _ _ [B] _
5 [Am]-7 _ _ [A]-7 and then [D] bending 5 slightly.
_ [E] _ Roll your third finger from 7 to 7 on the D and A. _ _ _
[G] 5 [A]-7-5 [C]-7.
[Eb] _ _ Pre [G]-bend again.
_ _ [D] Off and end on [N] the 7th fret.
Let's take that lick slowly, the second section. _
_ [C] _ _ _ [D] _ _ _ _
_ [A] _ _ _ [C] _ _ [D] _ [Am] _
_ [E] _ _ _ [Eb] _ [D] _ _ _
[Em] _ [D] _ _ _ _ [Eb] _ _ [Bb] _
[Am] Regular speed.
_ [D] _ _ _ [A] _
_ _ _ _ _ _ [D] _ _
_ [Am] _ _ [Dm] _ [A] _ _ And put some heavy vibrato.
I noticed that Gary Clark likes to vibrato pretty heavy at [Dm] times. _
_ And that kind of lick a lot.
Pre-bending. _
[D] _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ [A] _ _ And then heavy vibrato.
Pre-bending, pull down, pull off, and hitting the root.
_ _ _ _ [Cm] _ _ [A] _ _
_ _ [Abm] _ [Am] _ _ _ _ [D] _
_ _ _ _ _ [Am] _ _ _
_ [D] _ _ _ _ _ _ [N] _
_ _ So, that is the complete lick.
I think it's a pretty cool sounding, more of a rock blues thing.
I'm using a fuzz face here, the Jimmy Fuzz pedal.
There is not a fuzz face, it's just the square orange pedal, the Jimmy Fuzz.
If you can see the gear settings at the page on the link of this video.
_ Let's play the lick one more time.
It's this.
_ _ 1-2-3 [Am]-4.
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ [E] _ _ [A] _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ [Dm] _ _ [C] _ [Eb] _
_ _ [D] _ _ [Am] _ _ _ _
_ _ [Ebm] _ [D] _ _ _ _ _
[A] _ _ _ Okay, that's it for this podcast.
