[G] [C]
[G] Ragtime [N] fingerpicking, country blues.
Reverend Gary Davis, that's his tune, Candyman, done by lots of people.
You may have [Ab] heard even Stefan Grossman do it, but it's been recorded by dozens of people.
Ramblin' Jack Elliott was doing stuff [C] like this, Yorama Kaukinen in Hot Tuna.
I love to teach people [Db] this song, who have especially got a feel for a standard [C] alternating bass.
Maybe playing Dust in the Wind or The Moxer or [G] any kind of other blues tunes that are
not, those are blues tunes, [C] but playing anything that has a steady alternating [E] bass.
[N] But what happens in Candyman is the bass is upside down, where the bass note on the first
beat is the higher one, and the bass note on [Ab] the second beat is the lower one.
So I'm playing [Db] a C chord here, a normal [Ab] C chord, but I've got a high G on [G] with it as
part of the melody.
And the bass starts up on the G string, [C] and then down to the C in the bass.
[G] So on beat one, it's a [C] G down to C on beat two, and then on beat [A] three, an A in the bass
[D] on the second fret of the G [Gm] string, and [C] back down to the C.
So what you hear in the [G] bass is one, [Am] two, three, [C] four, one, two, three, four.
Now the melody notes [G] mix in there.
[C] And in the second measure, that high G comes off and goes to an E.
[Am] [N] So this offbeat thing
makes this song a great little stretch outside of the [Ab] comfort zone for a lot of fingerpickers
who have done a lot of [N] normal fingerpicking, but this upside down fingerpicking is a great technique.
I'm working on, probably, working on a complete lesson on this that I'll have up at totallyguitars.com.
But what we need to do is, if you're interested in learning this, come check us [Ab] out.
Look at all the other stuff around there, but if you want to learn Candyman, be sure
to hit the recommend a lesson button, and either vote on it if somebody else has already
put it up there, or get it in there quickly, because that's a lot of how we make decisions
on what we're doing there.
All kinds of [Gb] other cool stuff there to check out, but as [G] I'm working on new lessons over
the next few months, a lot of what I do is go look at that [Ab] list of lessons and see what's
getting the most requests.
[G] So this ragtime blues type stuff that we'll be getting into more of in the near future
[N] is really something I'm very excited about.
So if you want to see Candyman, Reverend Gary Davis, or anything else along those lines,
come over to totallyguitars.com, hit the recommend a lesson button, and I will try to get to it.
