Ladies and gentlemen, our first guest has just released a solo album called My Favorite Headache.
Please welcome Geddy Lee.
[A]
[Em] Yes.
Geddy [N] Lee, folks, an icon.
Kids all think you're on their computer screen now.
An icon, kids.
Yes, great to have you here.
Nice to be here.
Great to have you here, and great album.
Listened to it this afternoon, loved it.
Thank you very much.
No doubt about it, you have the most distinctive voice in rock and roll, my friend.
I'll tell you that.
This title struck me as rather strange, My Favorite Headache.
Where did that come from?
Well, it doesn't relate to your sponsor's relationship.
[G] Okay.
[F]
It's a good story, actually.
My writing partner on this project's name is Ben Mink, a long-time friend and a really great musician.
And he was having a conversation with his father during the making of this album.
And his father's Eastern European, has a very thick accent.
So he was saying to him, [Bb] telling him about some problem that his mother was having.
And he [N] said,
And right away she gets the favorite headache.
So Ben told me that story, and after I stopped laughing, I realized what a great phrase that was.
You know, what a contradictory phrase.
So mom wasn't in the mood, thus the name.
Something like that, I guess.
I'm sure glad my wife wasn't here.
This would be called, I Grow Tired of Your Chronic Impotence.
Now, this is the first time you've, the other fellas have had solo albums.
This is the first time you've ventured forth on your own from your two pals.
How did that feel?
Well, it [B] was strange at first.
But, you know, I was faced with a long hiatus with the band.
And I can't go too long without having to get busy at one thing or another.
And [Bb] also, I've wanted to work with Ben for quite some time.
So it was actually a [Eb] great opportunity to combine our friendship and to try to get something [Abm] musically that's outside of the band.
And you guys are still tight.
Still friends.
Oh yeah, totally.
We may see you get [N] together again very soon.
Absolutely.
We may see you get together again very soon right here.
Right here?
You never know.
Well, you know, we're a very busy show.
We can try and squeeze you in on a Wednesday.
Now, you worked with Ben Meek, as you mentioned, along with some other [Em] fine musicians on this CD.
Who else was on this with [B] you?
Matt [Bb] Cameron, the [N] drummer, yeah.
He's played with Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and a number of other people.
Fabulous drummer.
[Bb] And also Jeremy Taggart, who plays in a Canadian band called [Gb] Our Lady Peace.
[N] It was really a lot of fun.
It was a great experience to be outside the band for a change and to have a different kind of set of reference points.
Did you produce it yourself as well?
Yeah, Ben, myself and David Leonard co-produced it.
What studio did you use?
Well, we [B] recorded at my house and at Ben's house and in Seattle and in the studio in Vancouver, Toronto.
So we moved around quite [Ab] a bit.
It's quite a house, I bet.
You're not living out of a gym bag, are you?
[C] [Ab] Not no more.
Not no more.
That's right.
Now, that's fantastic.
Your life is [N] very, very good too.
People read about musicians who've gone down that dark, dark road.
You have a sense of family.
You have a nice family.
You've been together for quite a while.
Yeah, I'm a family guy.
Actually, my wife and I will be married 25 years coming up next year. Right, fantastic.
I've got two great kids and family life is important to me.
What's it like for your kids?
Are they like little Alex P.
Keaton's, you know what I mean?
No, I don't know what you mean.
Well, you're a long hair.
You're a musician.
Are they little accountants?
Do they think, oh my God.
Well, my son, who's about 20, grew up as an athlete in school.
And these days, he's rather academic and going to University of Toronto and studying archaeology.
So he's gone a different road than me.
And my daughter's six and she's just a sweet little button.
So we'll see what happens with her.
Fantastic.
I like hearing that kind of thing because we get a lot of these people up here, you know, they have no sense of anything.
I think, well, they don't.
We get people out here who have no sense of anything.
Anything.
They still stay the five minutes, but they have no sense of anything.
And that's the kind of thing that I admire.
I like that.
You know, it's the kind of thing that I aspire to.
Do you have a family?
Yeah.
But, you know, I don't call.
I'm not that type of guy.
You've also, another thing we have in common, you have a dog, I have a dog.
Yeah.
I walk my dog.
I walk my dog.
You walk your dog.
You walk your dog right by this building every day.
That's true.
And I hate to bring it up here, but we'd appreciate it if you'd start picking up that.
Little Steve there runs out every day with an A&T bag.
He's starting to get prettier at day.
Aren't you, Steve?
Now, I want to thank you for coming because, as I said, we've been trying to get you for a long, long time.
And I was kidding with you at the beginning of the interview, but I would love to have you come back and play any way you like.
Well, maybe that can happen.
Sure.
Thank you.
Get in here, ladies and gentlemen, and get out and buy this album.
You can get this at HMB.
I can get it anywhere.
HMB, Sam the Record Man.
Is this album available on TV?
On TV?
Yeah.
Remember the old Columbia House deal?
You can't get this record on TV.
Not quite yet.
All right, all right.
No, you can't.
And it also folds up.
That's what I liked about it, too.
Get it?
I like folds up.
A lot of value there in that cover.
Well, we try to please.
Yeah.
It's a pop-up.
No, this is a fantastic album.
It's inside, it's great, and I just love the way the whole thing's laid out.
I just don't want you to go.
Busy man, big rock star, he's got to go.
Besides, the dog's been home alone.
You want me to send somebody to get the dog?
Well, that's not a bad idea, but I think he'd prefer me.
You don't have to be the middle man this time.
Go and get the dog now.
All right.
Thank you very much, Kenny.
A real pleasure.
Go to it for Jason Yost.
