_ We're on the road [D] forever, but we finally put a band together finally
We're we're hanging out with George Ween at his home in New York.
It's
An honor to be here
_ Well, you don't understand with me.
It's an honor that you come here.
I mean, that's
You know, I've been in this business so long.
I
My whole joy is communicating to people.
That's my [Ab] joy, you know
The last time I saw the two of you [Bb] was fascinating
_ It was at the Herbie Hancock [Fm] concert and when you two came on for the finale
I'm sure you could feel it
Because we could feel it out in the audience.
[D] It just lifted up to another level and I
_ _ [Eb] _ _ [Bb] _
Said you have to have that group
_ [Ab] _ _ _
[E] _ _ So
_ _ How did you two get together
_ _ We [D] met in New Orleans
Was it the [Ab] singer theater?
_ _ [Db]
My band was opening for the Allman [Bb] Brothers and Derek had just started with them [E] about a month earlier.
It was July of
1999 [Bb] _
and I
_ _ [Ab] Start remember doing my sound check and being a nervous wreck [Bb] because I looked down the audience inside Derek and Otele Burbridge
Who are two of the finest musicians I think [A] of our generation and I was like, what are they doing out there [N] watching me?
And then we ended up hanging out and meeting and being friends on that tour.
Yeah
We were on the road for a long time together.
He's always joke with my bandmates
I was like, [B] I'm not [E] settling down unless I find a woman that has I had a whole list of
Records that she had to have in her collection
_ it was you know, it was Mahalia and John Coltrane and
_ [Bb] You know muddy waters it was it was a pretty [Em] diverse cross section.
So I thought I was safe
[Eb] _ _ _ [Bb] _
Stumble across it.
[F] So when I met Susan we started talking
_ Music and that was really a huge part of the connection early on.
That's that's when I knew I was [B] I was ensnared
[C] I was trapped
She got me _
_ _ You both work [F] Newport you with the [D] Allman Brothers, yeah [Bb] by yourself and _ _
_ What does this going this trip going to Newport mean to you because that's important to us what your feelings are
Yeah, _ but you know [C] speaking for [Bb] myself and I know the other guys in the band.
It's it's uh, it's hollowed ground
[Gm] it's me, I mean everybody in our group knows the significance of _
That that festival and that place and all the music that's [Bb]
that's been created there
_ _ Well for me, you know, it's it's always an honor I love it
I love the setting and for me being from Massachusetts, you know
I'm [B] a New England girl.
It feels [E] like I'm home [Ab] and I just I love seeing the sailboats and [Bbm] and I still see that
[Bb] You know that spirit in your festivals.
They're still [E] beautiful and and they have such a [Ab] higher
_ Importance even you know, I don't even know what to say exactly
But I think [D] you know
It definitely means a lot and going back with Derek is is an honor [Ab] and the musicianship on those festivals are always exquisite
You know, I don't feel like there's gonna [F] be a lot of fluff.
It's
It's music [D]
fans that are there to listen to music and it's not
[A] People that are [D] there for a scene or a party or drinking and drugs
There's people that want to come see great artists do [Eb] their thing and there's plenty of festivals now and there's plenty of scenes and places
for people to go
[Bb] music, there's something about
_ [D] One where the art and the creativity is what's held up and it's not it's not the other things
So we appreciate that
It's true.
There are two types of [Ab] festivals the only [D] directional ones that
Attract the same type [Ab] of crowd a very social thing with people want [Gm] to yeah get together and [Bb] swing or whatever [E] Yeah
_ _ [F] _ _ And [C] and the other festivals where [F] the music is their attraction
Yeah, and [Ab] not that the music [F] is in the attraction of the other festival it is but it's also part of an escapism
Absolutely.
It's not yeah
[Ab] Not looking for [F] a more
_ _ [N] Remembering experience musically.
Yeah, absolutely
_ Because you won [Ab] everything this year in the blues
_ _ I
Whatever this blues is the [Bb] best blues that and
_ _ [E]
You [Ab] could have either been [F] on the folk festival on the jazz [Bb] festival.
I
Decided to ask you to play the jazz festival.
What are your feelings about that?
_ _ It makes sense with this band.
Yeah, because we have a lot of guys who really do come from more of a jazz background
[E] _ It's almost like an army, you know
Musicians that are all [Bb] outstanding in their own, right?
You know, we have two fabulous drummers and we have a horn section
which is amazing and a tenor player that we both wanted to play with for about ten years and You know
And it's just a very special group and we're doing new things all the time and you know
And Derek is a [F] wonderful leader and inspiring everybody in the band.
So it was by a
Previous band we we would get bounced around from [Em] the blues festivals to the jazz festivals to the rock [Gm] festivals
We have we had a [Bb] toe in all of them, but not really accepted by any
_ I kind of like I like being on being in those gray areas, you know
and I feel like [N] this band is is that it it's a
You know, it's really [Bb] taken
It's taken from all [D] forms of American music and and world music.
I [Bb] think jazz did as well
_ _ [D] But I'm not I love the the idea of this band playing the jazz festival.
I think there's something [F] great about that
I'm very very happy on a [Ab] jazz fest.
I want to thank you for thank you
[Eb] Well, thank [E] you.
I hope we can we can help out.
It's gonna be fun _
I'm Derek [Dbm] trucks and I'm Susan [Bb] Tedeschi and you're gonna be seeing us in August 2012
[E] The Newport vessel with the [Em]
Tedeschi trust and our full [Bb] 11 piece.
[Ab] I don't even know what [E] it is
_ _ [F] Yeah, that's right, we're excited so we'll
