Hey, Bart Walsh here from Gibson USA and today I want to talk about the Les Paul Standard for 2013.
The Les Paul Standard, the iconic rock guitar of all time.
How do you make it better?
Well, we've improved some things and added some things to this instrument that takes
it to another level.
First of all, we have the locking grovers here on the headstock, which really make for
a more secure fit for the strings and less slippage.
You've got your bound neck.
Your neck is mahogany with a rosewood board and it's [F#] asymmetrical.
So the top's a little thicker than the bottom.
So it's like, it's based on a 60s profile, but it's really slimmer here at the bottom
and it just really fits your hand.
It's very comfortable.
Your hand doesn't get fatigued and if you're a shredder, it's more of a cool type of neck to have.
Another real great feature about this neck that's completely unique to the Gibson family
is that the medium jumbo frets are set in this compound radius neck and it goes from
10 at the nut all the way up to 16 at the end of the fretboard.
So it kind of goes through 10, 12, 16 all the way up and so that way up here you can
really bend the notes and not bottom out and here you've got more of a comfortable kind
of chord playing position at the first fret.
Going all up the way here, of course, it's bound body.
Now this top, [G#m] it's banging quilt.
Look at that.
Premium plus tops.
Now you don't have to get it in quilt.
You can get it in AA or AAA flame, bird's eye quilt or koa on this model.
And we're going to be alternating months with those and they're in limited supply.
So if you're going to order one, know that it's going to be a very few of these made
with these really nice tops [A] on them.
You have the Tone Pro's bridge locking system and you have the Burst Bucker [E] one and two pickups.
Now the thing about this guitar that's really unique is that we have something that's called fat taps.
The fat taps actually take a capacitor and kind of give it the feel and the vibe of famous
coil pickups and you don't lose a lot of volume when you tap the pickup.
You can hear it go from double to single but it doesn't lose any volume there.
[A] [F#]
[E] Same holds true for the neck pickup in the center position.
Now also in the tone knob, you have an out of [G#] phase switch.
[Bm] That kind of quacky and [G#]
[E]
then true [A] bypass when [Bm] you pull this tone knob up.
And what that does, it bypasses all the loading on all the tone controls and volume and goes
straight bridge to jack.
So that's about as good as you can get.
[A] [E] [A]
[E] [D]
[E] [G]
[E]
[A] So you can hear how that really adds a lot of sustain and kind of character, a little
brighter sound to the pickup.
So the [E] combinations of this, you know, it's one of the most versatile instruments we're
making at Gibson USA today.
