Gibson Les Paul vs ESP (E-II) Eclipse Shootout || Which Should You Get?? chords

As a fan and consistent user of single cut guitars, one of the questions that I get asked
most often is Gibson Les Paul or ESP Eclipse.
So this week on the channel, let's shoot em out.
[Bb]
Now as with most of my [G] shootout videos, this video is not going to be very [Ab] scientific,
if scientific at all.
The ESP Eclipse that I'm using is a USA Standard, now sold as the E2 Eclipse, and the Gibson
I'm [Am] using is a highly modified [G] 71 Custom.
[Dbm] Both have [Am] EMGs, the ESP has an 8160 combo with [N] the 18V mod to give it a little bit more
[Db] headroom, and the Gibson has an [E] 81X 60X set, which [Fm] is like an 8160 combo but with less
[C] compression, so the pickups should sound pretty similar.
Okay, let's get started.

So you're trying to decide between [B] an ESP Eclipse and a Gibson Les Paul, and to be [C] fair,
it's a pretty difficult choice.
[B] Both are extremely popular among rock, metal, and even pop punk musicians.
And [C] when you're looking online on the product pages at Sweetwater and Musician's Friend,
it's hard to distinguish why you'd pick one over the other.
[G] There are the obvious differences like the inlays, the headstock, and the control layout,
Les Pauls [D] have the additional tone knob, but that really isn't enough to pick one over the other.
Spec wise and even by looks, [G] they're very, very similar, but once you get them in your
hands, they feel [Em] very different.
The biggest, most notable difference is the chunkiness of a Les Paul compared [Eb] to an Eclipse,
both physically and [E] tonally.
The body is [Ebm] about a quarter inch thicker, and while the [Ab] neck of my particular Les Paul
isn't [E] as thick as some of the baseball bats you'll find on R7 Historic's for example,
it is definitely chunkier than the much thinner ESP neck.
[Gb] Interestingly, [C] even without all that extra wood material, the ESP is still quite a [Eb] heavy guitar.
It doesn't weigh as much as [G] a Les Paul Custom, but it's closer than you'd expect.
The chunkiness actually swings the other way [C] when we talk about frets.
The frets that ESP uses on the Eclipse are massive compared to what you find on Gibsons.
It drives some guitars [Eb] insane how huge they are, but I actually prefer it.
I find it to have a similar [D] effect to a scalloped fretboard, though obviously to a much smaller extent.
You can play with a much lighter touch and still have clear note articulation.
Another win for [G] the ESP in my book is that it comes stock with Godot locking tuners,
which are great for quick string changes [E] and tuning stability.
Overall, [Eb] I'd say that if you want a Les Paul, you have to go for [C] it, and ESP Eclipse
is not a like-for-like replacement.
Which Les Paul, be it a Studio or a Custom, [G] an Epiphone or a Gibson, [C] that's a whole
new can of worms that we won't get into right now, but maybe I'll do a video on
it later down the line.
To me, the ESP Eclipse kind of feels like a Super [B] Strat in Les Paul [D] form.
It isn't as chunky, which is a hallmark of a Les Paul, but that's not necessarily
a bad thing.
Some people love the classic shape, how it looks, how it contributes to that warm, round
tone, but don't love [Ab] the [C] heftiness that comes with a Les Paul, and that is the gap
that the ESP Eclipse [C] fills.
For more information about these guitars, there are links in the description.
If you enjoyed the video, make sure to give it a like and [G] subscribe for more gear demos and shootouts.
As always, [D] thanks so much for watching.
You've been awesome.
I've been [B] Hunter, and I'll see you for the next video.
