[N] I'm sorry it took so long.
I forgot about it.
Well we did too.
It made its way into a closet.
These two Martins here, we got to thinking about it.
Those are Glenn's.
Where did I get those?
I mean I had the idea.
That one had a big hole in the bottom.
See where he sits and stuff.
He's got it set up great.
Gotta be that guy.
Let's do this thing, Greg.
All right.
After about the time [A] I get to Phoenix, [Ab] Jimmy was asked to write a song for me [Bb] by the label
and [F] by myself.
And I went [Eb] down to, I went up to his house.
He called me.
I was down at the Capitol.
I went up to his house.
He was living in the Hollywood Hills then.
And he had this big, huge organ there.
And he sat down and played Wichita Lineman for me.
And it just totally, totally, I was just overjoyed with it.
For the lack of a better word, I was ecstatic.
And we went down and we couldn't get the sound like we wanted it.
So what we had to end up doing, we tried every synthesizer that they made then.
Jimmy went up and we carted that big old organ down.
It was like a pipe organ.
Down to the studio so we could get that sound and that hauntingness for Wichita [G] Lineman.
And Carol Kay, God bless her, she came up with that.
[F] Because we were just going to start it cold like that.
She came up with that lick.
And [Bb] everybody contributed, all the great musicians, [A] Hal Blaine, just to [Dm] name a few.
[Gm] I think Joe Osborne, no, Carol Kay was on bass.
[Eb] Tommy Tedesco, God rest his soul.
And just a bunch of great players.
And of course a great, great arrangement.
We did it and [Cm] I gave it to Al Deloria and he put the strings on it.
He did a marvelous job on it.
[B] When you do things like that, you don't think about it being the most played
or the biggest record of all time or whatever.
It also made it into the 49th best single of all time.
And I contribute that to the writing of Jimmy Webb.
He's just a total genius.
Without Jimmy Webb, I know that I wouldn't have had the career
that I've had to this point.
And I'm [F] enjoying singing it because Jimmy Webb songs don't get old.
I love that intro.
I am a lineman [Bb] for the county and [F] I drive the main [Gm] road,
searching [Am] in the sun for [G] another overload.
[D]
I hear you singing in the wire and I can hear you through the wine.
[Gm] And the Wichita [D] Line is still [Bb] on the line.
[D] That's where the organ part came in there.
It was going, me, me, [Bb] me, me, me, me, me, me, me, me.
He was doing some weird things.
But I want to thank Jimmy Webb and I want to just say, Jimmy,
I'm so happy to be a part of [N] a lot of your creations.
You're great at it and I think I'm very blessed to be here this evening
saying what I'm saying.
And I want to thank everyone for this award.
