Has the song American Idiot ever had any more, sort of a more appropriate feeling than at the moment?
_ Wow. _ _ _ _
[N] Hello, Green Day.
Yes.
Or two-thirds of Green Day.
Two-thirds.
We're waiting for Trey to get off the loo.
Okay.
Is he normally a while?
You'll figure the drummer's not on time.
Yeah, _ that never happens, does it?
Ever.
Firstly, congratulations on winning your Global Icon Awards at the Europe MTV Awards the other day. Oh, thanks.
Yeah, thanks.
Hanging out in Holland for a bit.
It's quite nice.
Something else to put on my business card.
You must have a collection.
Cladurant Global Icon.
_ After your name, there must be quite a lot of different accolades that can follow your names.
Yeah.
High School Dropout, that's one of them.
_ Well, look who decided to show.
Drummers are always late.
As you were saying, yes.
Right, well, welcome.
I now have all three of Green Day here.
And you guys quite literally came back onto the scene,
back into our lives with a bang-bang a few months ago.
Yeah, nice one.
Do you like that?
Have you heard that before?
No.
No, that's the first time.
Okay.
That's good.
Well, it's very exciting, obviously, to have you back.
First full album since 2012.
You did have some Christmas stuff, but first full album since 2012.
And how do you guys feel in the lead up to a release these days?
Do you still get really excited or nervous or are you just like, it's cool,
we've got a banger on our hands, it's going to be fine?
I think it's just like you get like, wow, we're still here.
Here we go again.
And we're just proud of it, I guess.
Yeah, and it's still exciting.
It's been a long time since we put a record out.
And then not to mention, nowadays, when you finally do get to put the record out,
it's like, oh, this is great.
I don't have to hide these files on my computer anymore or hide the CD.
You've got to hide other ones.
Yeah.
You know, being a global icon_
No, sorry, I just had to throw that in there.
Yeah, well, it's true.
High school dropout.
Yeah.
_ How did this record come about then?
Did you guys say, this is the time or had it been scheduled for ages?
You're like, we're going to get together and make a record in 2016.
Well, we didn't want to put a deadline on anything.
I mean, obviously, you're already slightly wary of it, but we just kind of like,
we didn't tell the record company that we were making a record.
It was just us and our engineer.
So we just go in the studio every day and just start banging songs out.
Yeah, when they're sounding amazing.
Oh, thanks.
So yeah, everyone's enjoying them.
Bang, banging songs out.
That's it.
There you go.
You got it.
So do you think, just moving slightly away from Revolution Radio, actually,
has the song American Idiot ever had any more,
sort of a more appropriate feeling than at the moment?
Wow.
_ _ It_ No.
No, I'm going to go with an emphatic no on that one.
What that it hasn't_
It has never had more meaning than it does within the last 24 hours.
Yeah.
It's been pretty crazy for you guys.
Have you spoken to people back home?
_ Yeah, I just spoke to my family and it definitely, it's like you go in a crisis mode.
I mean, honestly, and to get serious for a second.
A _ lot of people are really freaked out and angry and confused.
And there's something about the vote was obviously kind of a protest vote
with, for the people that actually voted in the [Fm] office too,
because the establishment [G] politics is so corrupt right now.
But it's hard because they voted in a dictator.
Someone that's literally, it's the first true fascist that America has ever voted in the office.
When Obama came in, we didn't vote against George Bush because he was _ white or because he was_
_ We voted against his policies.
And with Donald Trump, his platform started with calling Barack Obama,
saying that he wasn't a US citizen.
And with that said, he might as well have been calling him the N-bomb.
So it was_
Well, with wanting to build a giant wall _ between Mexico and the United States.
I'm like, I know other people out there that have wanted to build walls.
That's pretty scary.
Yeah, he marginalized, _ and it's basically like an introduction to some form of
grotesque ethnic cleansing.
It's like the Republican Party now is officially a white nationalist party,
and there's no doubt about it.
You can't whitewash that. _ _
It's a very scary time in American politics.
It's a horrible, horrible situation really for you guys.
Yeah.
Well, let's bring things back to being a bit more fun and talk about touring,
because you're coming back in February.
And the last time I saw you_
If we live.
Yeah, that's true.
Let's just say we're going to be over here a lot more.
Yeah.
Yeah, come over.
You're welcome.
I've got a spare room if you need someone to crouch.
Last summer, I put up this text on my Instagram between me and Adrian and my wife,
and I said, if Donald Trump becomes the president, we're moving to England. _
And if you look back, I'm like, oh man, how prophetic was that?
But now we're coming back on tour.
Nice.
_ Can we expect big things from the show?
Yeah.
Things exploding?
Bang, bang.
Our show's going to be bang, banging.
Our shows are always a big celebration of hanging out with the people that we've
been spending the last 20 years with.
Pretty amazing.
Well, the last time I saw you live was at Reading Festival when you did that
secret show in the morning.
It was like a Saturday or Sunday morning.
Yeah, yeah.
And it was secret, but I think the word had got out a little bit beforehand.
There were a lot of people there going crazy.
It was fun.
That was really fun.
Just on a side note, actually, Billy, I just want to say I'm really enjoying Swimmers.
Oh, yeah.
It's awesome.
Absolutely awesome band.
I had Figuring It Out as my single of the week back at the start of the year.
Oh, cool.
And yeah, really good.
Yeah, they're a great rock and roll band.
They write great songs. _ _
The drummer tends to be a little bit of a problem.
No, but they're great [B] guys and they made a really strong record.
And they bring it live, man.
Yeah.
Do you guys give them advice or are you just letting them get on with it?
I let them get on with it.
They play so many shows.
They're really, they figure everything out themselves.
In fact, in a lot of ways, they enlighten us. _ _ _
